Police are on the ground in the west end of St. John's, looking for a suspect after what they believe is a targeted attack that's left a woman hospitalized.

Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Const. James Cadigan told CBC News that the alleged attack happened at a home on Curling Place, near the Village Mall.

Cadigan said the woman was taken to hospital after an assault at the residence, but didn't know the extent of her injuries.

Cadigan said the woman lives at the residence where the alleged attack, believed to be targeted, took place. Police say it's not yet clear whether the suspect also lives there.

Police are searching for the suspect in the Cowan Heights and Topsail Road areas.

The police are not naming the suspect, but said he was last seen wearing a black fur-hooded jacket, red sweater, blue pants, Timberland boots and a backpack.
