The biggest/meanest/most expensive line-ups don't always win!
A Recent Battle
The Ruleset
- Low mana cap
- Blast + Melee Mayhem
90% of the time I'd be going for speed whenever I see a blast ruleset... but the low mana cap prevents me from picking my Spirit Miner and/or Ruler of the Seas speed boosts.
Well... that, and in this specific game, the water splinter was excluded ANYWAY... so my choice was made for me 😜.
So What to do?
Summoner:
Almost never my 1st choice for a summoner in Silver I/Gold leagues, because he's only a level 2 summoner (I still need 2 more of these bad boys to get to level 3... a problem easily enough solved with a $7 payout on this post * hint, hint 😉 ).
The Melee Mayhem ruleset had me fairly sure my opponent would be heavy on the melee attack.
... and pairing Zintaur with a haunted spirit in the 1st position (high health for such a low mana cap & ability to heal), I was confident I could absorb at least a few rounds' damage.
... so I took a gamble with my level 2 summoner vs my opponents at least a lvl 3, possibly even level 4 summoner.
Yes! Zintaur/Haunted Spirit is great in low mana cap games that are going to be melee heavy, but now the pesky blast ruleset meant my backline was going to get decimated, after which my opponent could easily pick away at my Haunted Spirit.
Enter our game changer: Venator Kinjo
A very low summoning cost at just 2 made him an obvious choice for the second position to absorb all that blast/splash damage, giving the rest of my backline a fighting chance.
Let's Fight!
OH NO!!! ... At first glance, you might think I'm gonna get my ass handed to me BIG TIME in this battle. Even with all those level 3,4 & 5 monsters in my opponents line-up, I would have still been confident if it wasn't for my opponents Silvershield Knight boosting all his melee attacks.. add to that my opponent's shield repair that is going to hinder my limited attacks... looks like we're in for a tough one here 🤔🤔🤔
... but have a look and see how Venator Kinjo STILL managed to save the day. Click the link below to watch the game play itself out.

... and there you have it boy's and girls: Monster abilities & positioning is (almost) more important that having the biggest & meanest monsters in your deck.
