Friday the 13th comes a day early
As the title says, Friday the 13th came a day early for @mrsbozz and I. We were minding our own business heading home from Sam's Club when suddenly a deer jumped into the road and avoiding it was impossible. Both the deer and us were okay as far as I know. The deer jumped up out of the ditch and took off at a sprint. The car I was able to shove some of the plastic pieces back together and at least get us home.
While we were sitting on the side of the road we gave our insurance agent a call to see what we needed to do. Specifically I was curious if we needed to wait around for the police to take a report or since there was no property damage beyond our own and there were no other cars involved if we could just call and place a claim.
He said we could just call and place a claim, so like I said, we made our way home.
Clearly the damage could have been much worse. The airbags didn't even go off, but it sucks because we haven't even had this car for two months now and we have already had to get the windshield replaced due to an errant rock and now this. Being an adult sure does suck sometimes.
The good news is, we have good insurance and although our premium will likely go up now, our deductible to get all the body work done is only $100 USD. That's the thing, we pay a higher premium each month so that we can have a low deductible. When you go to your insurance company and try to negotiate a lower premium, they often do it at the cost of having a higher deductible.
Now, since insurance is one of those things you pay for but hope you never have to use, you might be comfortable taking that gamble. Personally, I am not, so we pay more to lessen the burden when stuff like this happens.
I bet you were wondering how I was going to turn this into a Friday Finance post didn't you? Well there you go!
It is time again for another Finance Friday/Friday Finance. This is a series I started where I talk about random bits of financial stuff that I have seen, gathered, or experienced during the week. I hope as a reader you find it informational, entertaining, or both. I also hope it can generate some good discussion and edify the Leo community.
DBOND
If you haven't been paying attention, the DBOND tokens for the DAB project created by @raymondspeaks and @silverstackeruk have now sold out. This was the first or second batch of tokens. They expect to release at least one more batch, but not for a bit yet. I've said in the past that I went into this a little more heavily than I had planned.
It seems like a good project and I have already seen a bit of return on my investment. With a prolonged average of something like 15 to 20 percent returns, it's one of the more stable and secure programs out there. The fact that all of the DBOND is backed by Hive is also pretty cool. You don't get that assurance in some of other projects out there.
Just a quick reminder, you need to have the DBOND token staked to earn DAB. Also, it's a lottery system, so staking DBOND doesn't guarantee you DAB. It's just the luck of the draw. Finally, staked DAB earns you more DBOND, unstaked DAB earns you Hive. Unstaked DBOND earns you absolutely nothing.
Chintai
I've been following the Chintai program for a while now. They have done some pivoting over the course of the past couple of years. Based on the EOS blockchain, it's a token that is probably not on many people's radar. In fact, most people try to avoid anything EOS related like the plague.
I picked up some of their CHEX token when it was relatively cheap hoping that I could one day flip it for a profit. That hasn't happened yet, but I also haven't given up hope that it could one day.
I just saw the news yesterday that Chintai has partnered with DNZ Venture Global to offer tokenized carbon credits. It feels a lot like what the VET token that I talked about last week is already doing, but hey, if this gives CHEX more of a use case, then I am not going to complain.
I learned last week that some people out there have some pretty strong opinions about carbon credits, but hey, if you were looking for something to swap your worthless EOS into, this might be an option.
Witness Votes
I wanted to give you another reminder that @nuthman is a long time Hive user, but first time witness on the blockchain now. If you haven't checked your votes in a while, be sure to hop into that part of your prefered front end and give him a vote.
He mentioned to me the other day that the price feed wasn't working for his witness, so he took the time to go in and fix it. The little things are important to him. Look at the witness list and check to see how many of them have an accurate price feed.
I'm not going to disparage anyone or call anyone out, but it's important to realize how much @nuthman cares about this blockchain.
If you are a witness or account that has people proxying their witness votes to you, please take the time to consider placing one of your votes for @nuthman.
Python and Beem
I've been saying for a long time that I would love to try and learn a bit of Python programming. My three biggest problems are the fact that 1. I haven't programmed in probably 20 years. 2. I wasn't very good at it when I did it. 3. finally, I couldn't think of a problem that required programming as a solution.
That changed yesterday when I realized there was something I wanted to find on Hive, but couldn't find the tool to do it. That doesn't mean the tool isn't out there, but I figured this might be a good chance to try and make my own. Even if it is for my own personal use.
You might notice I am being a bit cryptic about what I am planning to do. That's mostly because I don't want to get a ton of comments saying "oh, you can do that here already". The fact that I might be making something new and fresh makes it more exciting for me.
Whether it's actually that new or fresh is yet to be determined, but keep an eye on my blog because I will be posting about it if I am able to achieve my end goal.
Thanks in advance to @slobberchops for the help he has/will give me on this. It's safe to say I am a bit rusty!
I did write my obligatory "Hello World" program yesterday, so there is that...
PRINT "sorry to hear about your Friday 13th woes. That is good that you kept the deductible low though. Good luck with your python work and I look forward to your post."
Thanks, we will see how it goes. I have a feeling it is going to end up being too hard and I will just give up on it, but we will see.
Haha Friday the 13 got you good. But Good thing is that it got you good, not bad. Everyone is good.
Yeah, kind of hit me out of nowhere. Hopefully the actual day goes a bit better!
Yikes! That's a pain to happen just two months in. How much would it cost to have the work done if you didn't claim insurance? Sometimes in the UK it might be cheaper if you factor in the excess and the increase in premium
I don't think my premium is going to go up that much. I hope not anyway. I have to schedule an appointment for them to look at it, but I am guessing the actual bill will be in the thousands of dollars range.
Wtf!! It's looks like a bumper job, that's expensive! Yeah, better let the insurance deal with it, that's what it's for. Hope all goes well
Thank you! I appreciate it!
Wow......
So many people get caught out by selecting the cheapest and end up paying what they saved on their excess or as you call it deductibles. $100 is not bad and it is just the time of not having the vehicle now.
Yeah, and it actually works out kind of good because we won't need it for a week or so.
I am glad nuthman cares about the blockchain. I am powering down now due to some finance crisis, but I will surely start building back next month and vote him as a witness.
I am glad you and mrsbozz are okay. You did well trying to control things. Thanks for sharing.
That happens sometimes. Once you get powered back up, I am sure he will appreciate your vote! Thanks for the kind words. It was a pretty disappointing day for us.
Thank you. I am sorry about that. My regards to mrbozz.
I hear you on a bit rusty on programming, I haven't done much of it in about 20 years either and it was mainly C++, that long ago.... I hope you can get your idea together, you have to keep great ideas close to the vest or someone may steal it away!
DBOND is great, next round I'll buy in a lot heavier, this last time I have been investing more toward retirement funds.
Sorry to hear about the car, that sucks. I hate it when you have a new car and it gets damaged! Horrible feeling, plus your insurance rates usually go up. You have to have insurance though. Thank God no one got hurt though, that's what's most important!
Yeah, we were pretty lucky that it didn't turn out a lot worse than it could have. I honestly don't think I am going to be able to go as heavy into DBOND next time. I had some funds suddenly free up that allowed me to invest as much as I did. If they release the next batch in six to eight weeks, there is no way I am going to have very much saved up. C++ was my last real experience with programming as well. Python seems pretty intuitive, but connecting all the dots is going to be hard for me I think.
Lucky little fucker... Doesn't look to have left a lot of damage behind him, but trouble anyway. What model is it?
2022 Buick Envision. He folded the hood pretty good. It's driveable, but we probably will just let it sit in the garage until I have to take it to the body shop. Just to be safe.
Sorry about that
I'm glad that the airbags did not go off. I can imagine this kind of thing. It is always very annoying
This is the third deer I have hit, but the first time I have ever had this kind of damage from one.
I started with "Hello World", everyone does!
Oof! Only the other day @papilloncharity had a close encounter with a tree in his car. Seems nature is out to get you guys. At least it's just metal and plastic.
Just let me know if you need programming help. We really need to build up a library of scripts so people can adapt them to their needs.
Yeah, as I said in another comment, this is the third deer I have hit, but it is the first one to have done this much damage to one of my vehicles. I've backed into a tree before with my old truck, but that's about it. Thanks for the help today I had forgotten you also did programming. I will be sure to reach out to you. I guarantee I am going to need lots of help!
I hit a badger a few years back and that smashed my bumper. A friend hit a deer on his motorbike and broke his arm.
Oh wow, yeah, I was surprised at how solid the impact was when we hit the deer.
Glad to hear no Deer or Bozz was hurt making this post and indeed I am curious about what your planning will need to keep an eye on all your posts and not just my fav Friday one!
It's going to be a while, so you have time to get ready for it!
Well just tag me so I dont miss it

Wow! You too.
Thank you @steevc for the mention and it seems that nature has something to tell @bozz and us.
A Buick of all cars, and they are like gold here in South Africa. Luckily you have insurance, and they will pay, and due to your payments of a higher premium to keep the excess low, it will be affordable.
We won't claim from the insurance as our excess is too high, and we can only afford the lowest premium.
So, I am fixing the car and luckily, I am winning, as I use a special buffing compound to remove the scratches.
I hope that your car will also be fixed soon.
Thanks, I appreciate it! It's amazing what you can do with a little buffing. When we bought this car used it had some scratches on the side door and I made sure they buffed them out before we signed the papers on it.
Oh yes, in the past, long ago, I also spraypainted some of my own cars, and the experience of buffing was very helpful in this case. Unfortunately, I don't have a buffing machine anymore, but lame arms caused by the consistent rubbing certainly paid off. Glad that you also know about buffing, as so many don't.
!BEER
Oh wow, definitely going old school!
Yep, old school it is, and I qualify as I am old enough !LOL

.Hey @bozz, here is a little bit of
BEER
from @papilloncharity for you. Enjoy it!Did you know that <a href='https://dcity.io/cityyou can use BEER at dCity game to buy cards to rule the world.
Bugger! Here's it kangaroo we deal with. Last time one stole the front number plate and disappeared into the bush. I never did find it. My van still has the dent up front.
Oh man, I can't even imagine! We don't have front plates in Michigan, so no worries about that! I'd probably jump out of my skin if a kangaroo jumped out at me!
Oh really?
Honestly, a kangaroo is just an Australian deer!
They have been known to jump right in the back seat though - eek.
Yikes!
As always, thanks a ton for the shoutout! It is really rough at the lower witness ranks. I will definitely be out of pocket for a few months until I can get some more support. But it's all good. It gives me a chance to prove myself.
Always happy to support you!
Oh man! That deer incident reminds me of one time that I was driving from Florida to California. I was dead tired and driving through the sticks in Texas at night. There was a sign warning of animal crossings. I remember it reminded me of Pee-wee's Big Adventure when he was going down the dark highway and all the crazy street signs showed up. Suddenly, about every 0.4 miles, a different animal was crossing the road. It was insane! I thought I was tripping or something. I accidentally hit a rabbit which left both of us kind of traumatized. I really hate when that happens!
By the way, good look on your programming journey! It can be a lot of fun and give you a sense of satisfaction to create your very own application or tool that solves a problem.
Thanks, I appreciate it. I am starting to learn just how rusty I am and how hard this is actually going to be. The crazy thing about the deer was it was the middle of the day. I should have seen it. The car ahead of me saw it, but I was watching them and trying not to hit them when they slowed down. I didn't even realize why they were slowing down until it was too late. We have so many deer around where I live it's actually surprising this is the first serious accident I have had with one.
