NCAA Football: Conference Championships Are Here!

It's a bit hard to believe that the college football regular season is behind us now. I guess it makes sense when you consider the fact that Christmas is less than twenty days away. This is the time of year when thoughts turn to bowl games and basketball. Meanwhile the NFL just continues to plug along and I am happy to announce that after last night the Detroit Lions have clinched their spot in the playoffs. Don't worry, I will probably mention it two or three times again over the next couple of weeks if you missed it here!

Now they just need to focus on getting home field advantage. Motor City is more than ready for that party.

Actually, I didn't mention this before, but with the new 12 school format in the college football playoffs, the NCAA season has been extended a couple of weeks as well. The championship game will now be a bit closer to the Super Bowl than it was in the past.

Don't be shocked if you find yourself watching more basketball this coming weekend than football. There are only six games in the top 25 this weekend as the power conferences have their championship games. I'm not going to make you pick and choose this weekend. If you get a chance, you should try to catch all of these games. Even if you have to use multi-view for some of them.

Tonight Tulane faces (24)Army at 8:00 PM EST. Army may only have one more win that Tulane, but I have a feeling this game is going to be all Army. Don't quote me on that, it's just my hunch.

Also at 8:00 PM tonight, (20) UNLV is facing (10) Boise State. Odds favor the team with the blue turf, but you never know what might happen this time of year.

Tomorrow at noon (16) Iowa State faces (15) Arizona State in the Big 12 Championship. I'll be honest, Iowa State kind of came out of nowhere for me. I think they have had their position in this game locked up for a bit now, it wasn't until last weekend that they found out they would be playing ASU. Or vice versa. I can't quite remember! In a 15 vs 16 matchup, there is no shame in betting on the underdog. You do you though.

In the evening tomorrow we have (5) Georgia vs. (2) Texas in the SEC Championship. This will hopefully be a good game. Sadly, I'm going to be an hour south watching soccer while this game is happening. I might have to pull up YouTube TV on my phone and catch a few glances at it while I watch my niece man the goal!

To finish the day we have two more games at 8:00 PM. (3) Penn State is taking on (1) Oregon for the Big 10 Championship. Oregon is the only undefeated team in D1 for a reason. I fully expect Oregon to win this game. Don't get me wrong though, an upset by Penn State would be hella cool.

Finally, we have (17) Clemson versus (8) SMU in the ACC Championship. Odds have SMU with a slim margin, but I think this is probably going to be an easy win for the Mustangs.

You might notice there are a lot of numbers missing if there are 25 top teams in the country. That just goes to show you how stacked some of these conferences are. Think about it, half of the top ten teams didn't make it to their conference championship game because there were better teams than them and yet they are still better than 90% of the other teams. Some might argue it's because the ratings system is broken. I'll leave that up to you to decide...
