Football is Life: NCAA Week 6/NFL Week 5

I hope you appreciate my quote from the great Danny Rojas in the title. If you haven't had the chance to watch Ted Lasso yet, I highly recommend you rectify that as soon as possible. Sure, he was talking about a different kind of football, and we have already established that my weekend was dedicated to softball, but that doesn't mean there weren't some amazing American Football games on!

The good news coming out of this weekend on the college side of things is the fact that Michigan State didn't lose. Sure, they would have needed to play a game to lose, but now you are just arguing semantics with me. The Spartans did indeed have a bye this weekend, so hopefully they used that time to regroup and get their house in order. There are some new facts coming out in the case against Mel Tucker that could make that difficult, but we will leave that as an issue for the administrators to deal with.

Nebraska had another impressive win against Illinois this past weekend. Is it possible that they have turned the corner and they are on the road back to redemption. It's been a long time since they were in their glory.

Maryland was looking pretty good against Ohio State for the first half of the game. In fact, they went into halftime tied at 10 to 10. Unfortunately, they couldn't hold on and Ohio State steamrolled them with a 37 to 17 victory. That's 27 points in the second half alone. Ouch!

#9 Texas gave #5 Oklahoma a fit, but they couldn't push past the Sooners and ended up losing 30 to 34. I was busy doing other things, but I heard it was a heck of a game.

#18 UCLA had a close game against #19 Washington State but ended up winning 25 to 17. I feel like the West Coast might have a bone to pick with the rest of the nation this year.

Florida State stays in the number 4 spot easily downing Virginia Tech.

#11 Alabama also had a really close game against Texas A&M. It was heartbreaking honestly. I watched a bit of that game and nothing makes me happier than a Bama loss. Maybe next weekend...

#1 Georgia is sitting pretty nicely, they were looking in top form on Saturday night and they destroyed #24 Kentucky 51 to 13. #2 Michigan likewise throttled Minnesota 52 to 10, but let's be honest, what power team has Michigan really played so far this year? None. The answer is none.

Hats off to Georgia Tech for taking down #25 Miami 23 to 20 and probably the most exciting game of the weekend was #10 USC facing Arizona and taking the game into three overtimes before finally getting the 43 to 41 victory over the Wildcats.

We still have a long way to go before bowl season starts, so you better buckle in!

On the NFL side of things, it was a really good weekend if you are a Detroit Lions fan. They totally destroyed Carolina beating them 42 to 24. I want to be happy about this win, but that 24 points that the Panthers were able to put up against them has me concerned. If it hadn't been for the stellar play by the defense, this would have been a much closer game.

The fact that Green Bay lost to Las Vegas last night is just icing on the cake. It's so nice to finally feel some payback for all of those years as a loyal Lions fan.

San Francisco is looking like the team to beat this year and they tore apart Dallas in their game on Sunday. I was watching a bit of the KC game against Minnesota and it was pretty ridiculous to see how favorable the officials were being when it came to helping out The Chiefs. I haven't seen calls like that since they were making a concerted effort to crap all over the Lions.

That call/no call at the end of the game was a joke. It was unbelievable just how bad it was. I'm actually shocked the Viking nation didn't burn the place down. They had every right to be upset.

Detroit is now sitting solidly at the top of the NFC Central and if they can keep this up, they might have a good chance of at least making a wild card spot. They still have Philly and San Francisco with better records than them. It's not going to be an easy road...
