College Football has Commenced!
It's kind of hard to believe that football season is already here. I know that preseason NFL games have been going on for a couple of weeks now, but the fact that Michigan State University had their first home game on the season on Friday night kind of hit me out of left field.
Usually I am more on top of stuff than this, but I have had a lot of stuff going on with the start of school and some summer projects that I am finally finishing up. I still don't feel like I have settled in for the year yet and we are already almost a week into September.
Before you know it, college basketball season is going to start!
The draft for my family fantasy football league has already taken place. I am going to write some more about that tomorrow.
This Thursday, the Detroit Lions kick off their regular season against the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs. This should be a good barometer of how the Lions are going to do this season.
Likewise, as I said, Michigan State started their season this past weekend. It was a pretty interesting game because they were playing the Central Michigan Chippewas. Central Michigan University is located in Mt. Pleasant, MI which is just about 30 to 40 minutes down the road from where I live.
They are a Division 1 team, but they don't play in a power conference, do you don't usually hear too much about them.
The Spartans didn't have a really great year last year, so I am kind of not expecting much from them this year. They have a lot of work to do and a lot of rebuilding now that they have lost a couple of their key players due to graduations and the transfer portal.
Mel Tucker definitely has his work cut out for him and some tough questions to answer as they start this season. The fan base is getting restless and another losing season isn't going to go over too well with them.
The Spartans came out of the gate pretty ho hum in this game. Central Michigan was playing really well an their defense was doing everything they needed to stop MSU from getting things done.
After the initial possession of the ball in the first quarter, State basically let CMU have it the majority of the first quarter. It was tough to watch.
Thankfully, by the end of the first half, The Spartans had started to turn it around and things were finally seeming to click for them. They ended up winning the game something like 31 to 7.
It was a great recovery for what felt like was going to be a pretty cringe game. These "cupcake" games are usually supposed to go one way when they are played in the last summer, but every now and then you get a surprise win by the underdog.
That wasn't the case this week though. MSU got the win, CMU got a big check that will likely support their athletics department for the whole year, and I ended my Friday on a happy note!
I'm not expecting a BIG 10 championship this year, but I look forward to seeing how much the Spartans can grow through the season. I also hope they can maybe make a decent bowl appearance come the holidays.
