Back to work!
While the temperatures might not be as cold as the photo above yet, there is definitely a bit of crispness in the air after this past weekend. With the passing of Labor Day Weekend, it's the unofficial end of Summer, and Fall is right around the corner.
College football is back in the national spotlight, and teams all across the country are getting back to work.
In fact, some of them might be going back to the drawing board after this past opening weekend! The Michigan State Spartans is the prime example. I already posted about them yesterday, so today I am going to take the opportunity to cover the top 25 ranked teams in the nation and how they did across the holiday weekend.
If you have been following me for a while, you know that I love a good upset. While they aren't too common at this stage of the season, every now and then we get to see something magical happen. I'm looking at you Appalachian State! I'll never forget your glorious beat down of U of M that one year!
Most of the games this early in the season are considered cupcake games where power teams pay smaller schools a huge amount of money for them to come into town and get their butts handed to them. Every once in a while they flip the script and leave a fan base devastated.
That wasn't the case with Florida State as they traveled to Georgia Tech, but the #10 team in the nation still felt the sting of defeat at the hands of the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech had a huge upset over the Seminoles 24 to 21.
I'm honestly not going to cover a lot of the games this weekend because they were basically a lot to a little or no point beat downs. Take the #11 Missouri win over Murray State 51 to 0. In fact, there were a lot of cupcake teams that put up big goose eggs this past weekend.
#1 Georgia proved why they are back in the top spot despite the U of M national championship last year with a 34 to 3 win over the #14 Clemson Tigers.
#15 Tennessee had a huge 69 to 3 win over Chattanooga and they almost win the award for most points scored in a weekend. That honor actually goes to #6 Ole Miss with a 76 to 0 thrashing of Furman.
One of the biggest surprises of the weekend would probably be how close the #9 Michigan game was against Fresno State. That 30 to 10 score is a bit deceiving because it was actually a pretty close game for the most part.
I also think a little bit of respect should be given to New Mexico. They were able to put up 39 points against a #21 Arizona team that beat them 61 to 39. That could point to some defense issues on the part of Arizona that they are going to want to get fixed.
It could also be a precursor to New Mexico popping in and out of the bottom of the top 25 this season.
#7 Notre Dame had a close victory 23 to 13 over #20 Texas A&M, and finally we get to close out the week with a couple more upsets.
#23 USC took down #13 LSU 27 to 20. Welcome to the Big 10 USC! Likewise, Florida State continued their rough week with another loss to unranked Boston College 28 to 13.
Things are not looking good for the Seminoles right now!
