the man in the fountain

Driving to work, at strategic intersections, or maybe just randomly chosen corners, the latest political candidates have been speaking into megaphones, sharing their campaign promises with whomever is willing to listen.

It always surprises me, this style of politics, where people actually make themselves seen, where they stand in the hot sun, the strong wind and heavy rains smiling and waving to each passerby.

Where do they go after the elections? What do they go on to do, both the winners and the losers?

I wonder.

(1)

on the corner
as politicians campaign
pigeons look for bread

(2)

out to lunch
the man in the fountain
washing his feet

(3)

early summer nights
the smell of tobacco
an old love affair

(4)

how strange it sounds
the music of my youth
here and now

(5)

shhhh …
the wind says
shhhh …

(6)

piercing the darkness
hydrangeas
in the moonlight

(7)

as the sun comes up
I hear the call
to go home

Nice poem, definitely I would feel the call home to get away from politicians. I guess they go back to regular life and if they win whatever government salaried job they get. I remember as a kid we would see candidates out trying to win votes, you don't see that much more here in the US.

How's the family doing?

I can’t recall ever seeing this kind of political campaigning in the U.S. It’s something that really surprised me when I first came over here, and still does to this day, honestly.

My youngest just came down with that hand, foot, mouth rash. He doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it, though. Not at the moment anyway.

As a kid in a smaller town I would see the politicians to those kind of things, but not anymore! Interesting that its part of the politics over there.

Hand, foot, mouth rash, some nasty little virus! I hope he recovers soon.

Yeah, it’s still a big part of politics over here. That’s how the ex-prime minister was assassinated, making a speech on a street corner.

And hand, foot, mouth is gnarly, isn’t it. Fortunately it goes away quickly.

Every now and then in movies and TV shows they’ll share a glimpse of a candidate’s home life, the conversations that take place with his/her spouse and whatnot. I have no idea if these scenes are realistic or not, but they often show the spouse as not being very interested in continuing with the political journey.

I wonder if the ones who lose the elections go back to regular jobs and day-to-day living (if that’s where they’ve come from in the first place).

I’m glad you enjoyed the poems. I felt pretty happy with this week’s batch.

Good question, where do they go after elections?
It's sad how the same people who stood in the rains and harsh weather to campaign, seem to forget the locals when they get their wins.

For those who do not win, well, it's a wonder what they do.

It would be nice if the election winners stayed true to their word and platform more often than they do. That’s for sure.

Having worked in a very small bureaucratic role, though, I can understand how it’s difficult. Everyone thinks they’re getting cheated no matter how good they’ve got it. And no matter how many times you explain things to people, it seems like a third of them never listen, so you end up having to deal with the same ridiculous noise over and over again. And that makes it difficult to move forward with the important things.

The first one; it's so deep. Well played with the 'pigeons'. Made me laugh out loud, as we all know how places where pigeons reside look like 😉

The combination of images seemed like an apt metaphor for our real political systems, with so many people fighting for handouts.
