the kettle on the stove
Not far from my house is a private high school. One or two years ago, a student threw himself out of a fourth story window after failing a test and died.
Earlier this week, while walking past the place where he landed, I suddenly remembered the accident, and as I did so, I realized that there were some children playing nearby and laughing, completely unaware of what had happened a year or two before.
This seemed representative of so many things in life, and it compelled me to write the first poem in this week’s collection.
where you threw your body down
children are laughing
its water boiling over
no longer whistles
a man with his head down
suitcase in hand
smoky saxophone sounds
hazy twilight
beneath the midnight sky
grass rustles beside me
with nothing left
looking at the moon
more yellow than the sun
warm my heart

That's a sad thing to have happen, it's too bad that he felt so hopeless after a bad test result. I've had plenty of those myself over the years. Very nice poem! I really feel bad for his poor family...

Yeah, I can’t imagine how his family felt, or the students at the school where it happened.
My guess is that the test score was only the tip of the iceberg. There must have been some other things that he was dealing with, and since his suicide was triggered by test results, I think he probably lived in a home with high expectations.
It is sad.

Life does tend to go on...as it must, I suppose. I see a husband and a wife stroll by my house most days for exercise. I also know several years ago their beautiful and bright daughter killed herself. How one would go on from that, I do not know.
Geez … you must wonder what they’re thinking every time you see them go by.
I can’t imagine what that must be like. I would think that, for a while anyway, you’d wonder what you did wrong and what you could’ve done differently. Dealing with something like that must be a very difficult healing journey.
Such is life, it happens and then goes on. Quite sad, quite cold, but life goes on. Thank you for writing.
Something I like about haiku is that it sort of embraces the sentiments of your comment. It acknowledges and indulges in the sorrow and the melancholy while also dismissing it and accepting it as beautiful.
Absolutely! The depth of emotion and thought in haiku makes it that beautiful
