looking for Thumbelina

IMG_1896.jpeg

I wasn’t going to write about cherry blossoms this week.

With such a plethora of vibrant spring flowers all in bloom, there was supposed to be plenty of other things to write about. And there was.

The beginning of a new school year brought new school placements, which in turn provided plenty of fresh school scenes and unknown-to-me neighborhoods.

But everywhere, at every school, on every street, on every block, in every piece of open space, there were cherry trees—their blossoms varying from soft to deep pink, from early bloom to full bloom to past bloom.

And so, despite my intentions, they found their way once again into my poems.

(1)

full cherry bloom
dancing in the wind and rain
goodbyes come to soon

(2)

looking in the grass
beneath the magnolia tree
for Thumbelina

(3)

in the morning
I watch a thick fog rise
from my students’ eyes

(4)

cocky schoolboys
draw lines in the sand
dodgeball time

(5)

with a toothless smile
an old woman in the street
sweeps fallen petals

(6)

at the river’s edge
underneath a pale blue sky
pink pink and more pink

(7)

amongst spring flowers
tiny crimson maple leaves
begin their journey

That was a nice poem. I bet those petals are everywhere right now, they are so beautiful. It would be hard not to write about them if you have so many surrounding you.

Spring must be amazing there!

This spring has been a very good one. Unusually warm at the right times and seasonably cool as well, which made for a slowly unfolding and long lasting bloom. It was nice. And still is nice, although it’s almost gone.

I enjoyed your poem.

Your photos are all nice, but that second one is SO amazing with the trees backdropped by lights and their amazing clear reflections in the water.

Thanks. It almost looks like the colors have been inverted, doesn’t it? But it’s just a regular black and white photo taken at night of illuminated cherry trees in bloom.

Here is another one.

oh, that's a nice one too and it kind of does look inverted. So perfect.

This is an excellent haiku that makes me think of the brief nature of cherry blossoms. So beautiful and yet so ephemeral.
