lighting the way

The other day, while waiting in line to buy steamed sugar bread at a local festival, I watched a daughter and mother standing in front of me. The daughter was so eager to share the relentless stream of images and videos playing on the screen of her phone with her mother, who seemed more than happy to look and participate.

What were they watching?

Mostly ridiculous videos of cats.

It made me think of the content that I often find my children consuming, videos of people making mindless commentary and having over-the-top reactions while playing video games. This, in turn, reminded me of a thought I’ve been having a lot lately.

When we make content about dumb things, and when we act dumb in the videos that we make, we encourage a whole generation of children to go even further in that direction than we have.

In the future, will our only real skill be the ability to make group dance videos?

under the swings
how many feet have passed
ruts in the sand

(2)

stitches in the night
lighting the way
a firefly

(3)

in the restroom
I linger a minute
to enjoy the pause

(4)

on the steps out back
husking corn with dad again
forty years later

(5)

meeting you
in the rainy season
blue sky

(6)

in the corner
a rocking chair
gathers dust

(7)

all the goldfish
at the summer festival
saved by rain

Greetings @boxcarblue ,

Such lovely prose and poetry....thank you....for the moment in time.

So true ...a valid concern...What about the next generation.

...sensory stimulation...is one distraction that all generations are tasked with to put in its proper place....however since practically all facets of life use the computer...perhaps the ability to categorise is becoming even more difficult.

Bleujay would appreciate having different devises for different activities.....maybe a solution....maybe not. ^__^

Kind Regards,

Bleujay

Different devices for different activities could lead to a lot of devices. Or, it could have the other effect and lead to a reduction in activities. It would be interesting to see which way that works.

That image at the top is really cool. The black and white just sucks you in, until I saw the faces I almost though it was modern art of some kind! It is scary how much time people waste looking at stupid animal videos, and it does make we worry about the next generation. I'm sure they will straighten out as they get older like they all do. Most parent's on 80's kids thought we would destroy the world... lol

That's a great poem, it must have been a little damp out there at the festival. Sounds like you had some blue sky though.

Hopefully things work out for the future of the world, that is if the current leaders don't drag into all out nuclear war....

Yeah, I think it’s human nature to look down on and worry about the subsequent generations. Things always tend to work out, although, my guess is that the generations who came before us, even when seeing the successes of our generation and others would still frown on a lot of what we’ve become.

I suspect we would do the same in a hundred years or more. 🤣

Good question. I was chatting with a friend the other day about the evolution of the human pineal gland. Not only did it shrink over time but it has become overly calcified. If you go down the rabbit hole and dig deeper into this topic, you discover a strong linkage between hormones and the size of the pineal gland. The hormonal disbalances children face today (due to food for example) are a direct reflection of their behavior. There's tremendous power in that small pine cone-shaped "nugget" or grain of rice. The smaller it gets and the less we use it, the stupider we become as a species.
I'll go with haiku 6 as it reminds me of past generations; our ancestors.

I’ve never heard of a linkage between the pineal gland and hormones before. Interesting. That could explain a lot of what I’m seeing in schools these days.
