leaving the city
Left behind
Summer vacation, and all the students are home from school, as are their belongings. Well … most of their belongings anyway. There is always something that gets left behind by someone, and this time, the item in question seemed to speak loudly about the changing times and cherished arts that seem at risk of fading away.

At some point in the recent past, I seemed to have crossed an invisible line and entered into a new chapter. Instead of rushing me in and out of rooms from one exam to the next, the doctors and nurses have started telling me what to expect. Things like near-sightedness, ringing in the airs, and typical aches and pains.

Driving through the city earlier in the week, I was struck by a massive white crane flying between tall buildings and heading out of town. Most likely, it had just come from a small pond in a nearby park.

Isn’t it funny how something can catch your eye at any time?
These days I spend most weekends at parks with soccer fields, taking my son from one soccer tournament to the next. Last weekend, though, instead of just watching, we had a father son game, so I was able to play.
Upon leaving, sunburnt and exhausted, a slight breeze rattled a hibiscus tree just as I walked by and the flowers all shook in a way that grabbed my attention.

I suppose nothing much needs to be said about this one.

this was such a delight to read, and to look at!!! Thank you.
I’m happy to hear that. Quite the opposite from two weeks ago. 😊
Oh those were a delight to read too, but they seemed infused with sadness. Maybve delight isn't quite the right word.
Beautiful work @boxcarblue .
Thank you, as always!
I like the imagery evoked by this one. Rain can ruin a perfectly laid out plan for a BBQ, but that won't stop us.
It’s pretty hard to get between man and his BBQ. 🤣

Thank you.
Awesome job! I like the explanations you're including now behind what inspired the verses. The getting old part I understand all too well. Ringing in my ears 24/7, I've learned to almost ignore it now along with the aches and pains. Getting old sucks...
It's so fun to have little kids around, they love spending time with you. Then they become teenagers... I'm sure you know the feeling well already...
I hope the BBQ was good. Great poem you put together!
If I didn’t have the toddler to help me reset after dealing with the older two, I don’t know what I’d do. 😆
I try to remember that someday we’ll be retelling all these angry stories and they’ll be funny. 😬

Once again, fun set ups and nice haikus saying each with less words.
"turning a new page
the doctor says
at your age …"
This made me smile, not only for myself at "at your age"....but it made me think of my Mom. She has never been a hypochondriac in her younger yeara, but at 90, if she has a change or some different issue, she will go to the doctor to have it checked out. Her theory is that if it is something bad that could be starting, it is good to catch it early so maybe it can be cured faster. If her doctor tells her that it is not so unusual for her age, she wants a second opinion ! LOL !
That’s funny. It’s hard to accept that there just isn’t a cure for some things.
Yeah man as Im pushing 60 and I wake up each morning and do an inventory of whats aching today 🙂.
