beyond words

On the horizon

I love living near mountains. The multitude of ways they present themselves throughout the year never fails to amaze me.

(1)

engulfed by fog
feelings that are
beyond words

Waiting for Relief

It has been a hot September here in Japan. While I think that is pretty typical, this September seems to be worse than years past. The irritation that this has caused me reminds of the point you sometimes reach in young relationships where you spend too much time together and all the things that once charmed you begin to drive you crazy.

(2)

September heat
our passion replaced by
friction

PC

Being a teacher, especially a teacher of English in a foreign country, the older I get, the more confusing it becomes to know what is and is not acceptable to say these days. Not only that, but finding words and expressions to replace those that I grew up with, and then remember to use them at appropriate times, for me, takes time.

(3)

Indian summer …
learning to say
no more

Weaving in Humor

With crickets being as loud as they are (or are they just louder in Japan?), I think it’s funny that we sometimes describe moments of quiet with the expression Crickets. In this haiku, I’m working with a pun, not only is it nice to wake to the sound of crickets in early autumn, but it’s also nice to wake up to silence, as opposed to the chaos that young children sometimes bring to a person’s morning routine (or lack thereof).

(4)

ahhh …
waking to the sound of
crickets

Memories

Seeing some of the long-haired caterpillars in Japan, I think back to being a kid and hearing the adults make comments about upcoming winters.

(5)

winter predictions
a wooly bear caterpillar
on the front steps

Hustle

It’s something that you just can’t teach. People either have it or they don’t. My son just doesn’t have it, not at the moment anyway. I sure wish he did, and maybe he’ll figure it out someday, but for the time being, the only thing I can do is remind myself that my days on the field are done.

(6)

parent challenge
accepting the fact
you’re not in the game

Dim the lighting

I usually like bright houses with big windows, but I have a soft spot for that strange dampened lighting that storms sometimes bring with them.

(7)

odd delights
the darkness of a house
on a rainy day

Greetings @boxcarblue ,

You are describing, poetising, our time of year beautifully...reading the words again and again brings an elegance to life one would not want to miss....thank you!

Thank you for your endless encouragement. What are the seasons like at this time of year in your part of the world?

Greetings @boxcarblue ,

We are experiencing the very same...Crickets started chirping just last week, fog rolling in and a bit of rain....just as your lovely poem described ^__^

Kind Regards,

Bleujay

Great stuff again. It's sure been a long time since I was in an early dating relationship and spent a lot of time together. Seems life a lifetime ago... lol. That heat should be breaking soon! I bet the seasons there bring a lot change unlike southern California!

You run into that PC crap over there too? I thought it was only here along with the woke garbage. I remember the first time I heard about the pronouns crap was a guy with long beard and wearing a bright red dress wanted to be addressed by his female pronouns and name.... WTF has this world come to?

You know, I miss having little kids around. But I wouldn't do that over again now, I don't know how you're handling it!

Great poem, keep it up!

Actually, I don’t encounter much of the PC conflict over here, but that kind of makes it all the more confusing because I hear about it and I get asked about it, but my English is in something akin to a time capsule, so I don’t know how to approach it or teach it.

As for the kids, one day at a time. 🤣

I feel you on the PC thing, Me and my partner are trans and I'm still getting used to new terms and phrases even new names.

Language changes fast, and the ways people get offended these days seems to be on the rise too.

When I visit America now, I actually feel more like English is my second language than my first because I’ve been living in a non-English speaking country for so long.

So much of language is about the culture behind it, and I’ve completely adapted to a different culture, so even though I speak the language, I don’t know how to navigate the situations and new technologies and burgeoning cultures, etc.

You're so good at this.

Once again, I love reading your prompting thoughts and the haiku words you come up with.

Not everyone was made to play the game. Perhaps something else will light the energy spark.

Well, he claims to be determined to go pro, so we’ll see. 🤣

I didn’t have much discipline and natural drive as a kid either (outside of actual games). It took me a long time to figure that out. Naturally, I hope my kids don’t take as long as I did (or longer), but it’s their journey.

ha ha I understand. Maybe he WIll grow into it. Determination has gotten many people to places no one would ever have guessed.

I had no idea what I wanted to do when I grew up, I still don't. 😂
