Sunset & Windmills: A 5-Minute Drone Magic Session

avatar

Hey there, fellow drone and photography enthusiasts!

Last evening, I found myself cruising down the highway to pick up my daughter. You know the drill – late, annoyed, cursing under your breath at the endless stretch of asphalt. But then I hit the jackpot: the windmill-dense area. This place is always a sight to behold, but at sunset? Oh man, it’s like nature and technology had a love child, and it’s glorious.

Now, being the savvy photographer and drone enthusiast I am (yeah, I’m tooting my own horn, just roll with it), I had my DJI Mini 3 Pro handy. I mean, back in my day, we had disposable cameras and hoped for the best. Now, we’ve got drones that make you feel like Spielberg with an unlimited budget. Times have changed, my friends.

So, with a solid five minutes to spare before dad duty called, I took the next exit, parked the car, and let the drone fly. And let me tell you, those five minutes turned into a visual feast. The sky painted with hues of orange and pink, the silhouettes of windmills standing tall like guardians of the horizon – it was poetry in motion. Or, you know, just a really dope sight.

Here’s the lowdown on the shots I snagged:

Ground to Sky Symphony: The first shot was a ground-level perspective with the windmill just peeking over the tall grass, the setting sun casting a golden glow. It’s like nature was saying, "Hey, check out my new Insta filter."

DJI_0747-HDR.jpg

Highway Guardians: The second image took a higher perspective, capturing the line of windmills along the highway, blending the man-made with the natural. It’s like watching giants overseeing the land, keeping it eco-friendly and all that jazz.

DJI_0772-HDR.jpg

Sunset Embrace: The third shot was a close-up, capturing the sun’s rays kissing the windmill blades. It’s one of those shots that makes you go, “Wow, maybe renewable energy isn’t just a bunch of hot air.”

DJI_0786-HDR.jpg

Distant Dream: The fourth image stretched out the perspective, showing a vast line of windmills fading into the horizon. It’s the kind of shot that makes you appreciate the blend of technology and landscape – a visual reminder that we’re moving towards a greener future, one windmill at a time.

DJI_0762-HDR.jpg

Golden Finale: The final shot captured the windmills basking in the last light of day. The sky, a canvas of vibrant colors, made the perfect backdrop for these towering structures. It’s a shot that screams serenity and power all at once.

DJI_0792-HDR.jpg

For all you drone lovers and shutterbugs out there, take this as a reminder: always have your gear ready. You never know when you’ll stumble upon a scene that begs to be captured. And don’t just look at things, see them. There’s a difference, and once you get it, every drive, every walk, every moment becomes an opportunity to create something amazing.

So, next time you’re out and about, don’t just pass by – stop, look, and unleash your inner Spielberg. Your DJI Mini 3 Pro and the universe’s magic are all you need. Just saying.

Keep flying, keep snapping, and keep finding those moments that make you go, "Damn, that’s a shot!"

Cheers,
The Dad Who Ditched the Car for a Drone

Nice-N-quick drone shots, @borniet! It's pretty cool that you can get it in the air so quickly! On the subject of those kind of windmills and "green energy" in general, don't get me started...lol! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Haha...this may be somewhat long. Like most things labeled as 'green' or 'sustainable', the reality is actually quite different. Let's go down a list of issues with them.

1.) It takes more energy to produce them than they generate in their entire lifespan.

2.) Speaking of their lifespan, it's quite short, especially for the blades. When they no longer function, they are sent to windmill graveyards, filled with innumerable of them.

  1. They are quite fragile, and are very often destroyed by high winds. Imagine that, a windmill breaking in the wind...lol.

4.) They produce an ultra-low frequency that often makes people that live near the sick. Those same frequencies also have a deliterious effect oh wildlife, especially birds.

5.) On the subject of birds, they kill lots of them, the most notable being large predatory birds like eagles and hawks. They get whacked by the blades, and plumet to earth.

Those are the ones that came to my mind at the moment. So many 'green-energy technologies' are not at all effective in the way that they are implemented. Small scale works pretty well with things like solar and windmills, but every large-scale implementation, sooner or later, is a disaster. The words 'sustainable' and 'green' are more of the pretty-and-flowery ones used to push dark agendas forward. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Unfortunately, as soon as money is to be made, they start abusing it. To earn on the back of the population, and th push that very same population into a certain direction.
Again indeed, I am totally unsurprised by how unsurprised I am!

Which programming language is best… hmmm…
I’d go for C or PHP actually. Python is easy to learn, but perhaps just a tad too easy, which makes it allowing for bad practices. Same for JavaScript. With the added disadvantage in JS that there are so many different frameworks that create dialects of JS that if you work in that one framework, you can’t even use the base language anymore (more or less).
So in that sense, C or PHP. Basic and rather strict (or very strict in the case of C).
And if not one of those: I’d go for python.
!INDEED
!ALIVE

And more coders would be welcome for sure! But we need to keep accessibility of the platform in mind as well. So that non-coders or techie people still feel at home.

Since you say Command Line, it is not your average windows user who knows Google FB and Word. So they would not have an issue with using the command like “python3 thehivecommand parameter 1, 2, 3”
This also makes it very portable.
If you’d want to go for speed, I’d go for C++ for this one. Then you have an executable, but need a different one for each platform…

Ah, OK, I understand! People really should become comfortable with the command line! I keep hearing about C++. Ah, yes, I'm familiar with the need to complile binaries for each platform, unless of course it's in Java. 😁🙏💚✨🤙

!LOL @ !BADASS :-D
C++ is basically the object oriented version of C (and some more). But due to the low-levelness of both these, it’s not just only compiling a new binary for each platform, depending on what your code does, it can potentially also include quite some codechanges as well!
That’s an advantage of Java, you write 1 code, compile 1 binary (or actually an intermediate in this case), and you run it in the Java Virtual Machine, which is adjusted for every single platform.

Java is indeed quite consistent and logical, and definitely also a good language to start learning.
I would say any language that is strict is VERY good for learning, as it helps you code correctly.
The later/looser languages are easier to learn, because you don’t need to take care of typecasting and all, but by doing that it allows for many more mistakes, which will not necessarily crash your app, but will have an impact on speed and possibly security.

That's very true, and even though I'm not a coder yet, I still recognize clean and sloppy code when I see it! I want solid good habits in this regard! OK, that's what I was figuring. I've already mostly set up Beem and Hiveengine on at least two of my Arch Linux installs. I want to be able to contribute in this way, too! Thank you muchly, I'm sure that I shall! I tried CodeBlocks yesterday, which I've used before, but it was having errors and wouldn't start, so I'm in the process of looking for another IDE with which to learn. Presently I'm reading about Eclipse, but I haven't installed it yet. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Pretty sure you will enjoy it !INDEED :-)
I've never used CodeBlocks to be honest... I did use Eclipse for a long (and happy) time, but it became too heavy to run, too slow to boot and to work with. Then I switched to Jetbrains IDE's, mostly PHPStorm. They are good, really good. And I had the paying pro version, which was totally good! But then came the issue of working with more languages, and not always being in a strictly developer role anymore, or being forced to work with the customer's preferred IDE.
That's when I switched to CodeAnywhere. That's an online cloud development IDE that supports many different languages, and has a ton of useful features for me (adding SSH access to your own server etcetera). It allows me access to my own stuff, everywhere I want, as long as I have a browserwindow...
They even used to have a mobile app, but that got discontinued :-) Unfortunately, because for the quick bugfix it could still come in pretty handy! But I think their webapp is now also very mobile-friendly.

That's very good to hear! It definitely seems quite full-featured, and a tad complex! I still have to settle on one good IDE, and make the time to first learn it, and then the languages that I intend to learn. I !INDEED really appreciate you sharing your experiences with these various IDEs! I still haven't started on my core-language learning yet, which is bothering me a bit, but I'll do my best with the time that I have to explore. Some version of a web app might be a good choice, especially if I'm able to use it both on my computer and my phone. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

True, choosing a good IDE is half of the battle! On the other hand, depending on what and how, I even sometimes use Vi :-D And if only those over-superfluous apps are available, I’d rather default to something like Notepad++ or something alike. The most important thing for me is syntax highlighting, as it often helps in debugging. All those “automatic syntax completion” and stuff mostly makes you forget about the correct syntax anyway ;-)

Yes, I'm seeing that! Light and simple can be great! Yes, apps like gedit in Linux have syntax highlighting too, which I find super helpful for scripting work. I may start looking at online versions. I also need to find good, free training courses for Java and Python. 😁🙏💚✨🤙

So very much yes! It's glorious! We have a structure built out on the lava, called the dog house, with a giant antenna on top or it, and a mobile-broadband router inside it, that then connects via ethernet to the rest of the property. Since there is so much distance to cover, there are multiple repeater points with switches, which of course are also access points. I just hooked up internet to a new building yesterday. I actually want to get Starlink, as I've been hearing very good things about it! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

I suppose that the area is naturally ill-covered by the mobile network (4G), but you're able to connect due to the big antenna?
Yes, the Starlink stuff really is good. Up until recently, it was way faster and more reliable than our coax connection. In the meantime they came to our house and replaced all the cables inside and outside, and now the coax connection is faster again. Yet, I still rely on the Starlink from time to time.

!DIY is how we do pretty much everything here, so yep, it's a very good tag for sure! It's certainly a very custom system! Yep, that's true, mobile coverage is still spotty out here, though it is way better now, as they've added more antennas. The broadband router used to connect to Verizon, then AT&T, and now it's on T-Mobile, which is surprisingly far faster and more stable than any previous networks. Our antenna connects to a T-Mobile antenna a few miles away. We may not even need the big antenna any longer, but it definitely doesn't seem to hurt!

That's so interesting about StarLink compared to your coax connection, and the shift in terms of which one is faster and more stable. Good hardline connections are still often faster. StarLink is a great backup in that case! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

!INDEED, using the Starlink mainly as a backup, or to work from the garden (luxury problem, I know) and for possible travel in the future. It’s mostly giving a 200-ish MBs speed, so not bad at all. I was thinking of getting StarLink just for myself, as I'd then be responsible for my own internet connection. I need more stable income, more evenly distributed through the year, for that to be fessible, though. 200ish is great, and far better than here. We top out around maybe 15 Mbps. 950 is very nice indeed, and those are the fastest speeds I've seen for coaxial. Ah yes, fiber...I had Google Fiber twice when I lived in Austin. I thought that !LUV is the "older sister" and HBIT is the "younger brother". 🤣😂

That might be the case. I never looked into which one came first. 😁🙏💚✨🤙

The !LUV tipping project came first, then its human creator/operator decided to create Hive's first self-tipping project, which is then HBIT. 🤓😎

OK, cool, and the progression make sense. Thanks much for the info! 😁🙏💚✨🤙

Someone might want to create a Hive tipping token that is not on #HiveEngine, similar to #Honeycomb's SPK, DLUX, or DUAT tokens but for tipping. 🤔😎😅

That's another fascinating and cool idea! I'll keep it in mind to see if it's possible. 😁🙏💚✨🤙

Your comment implies that you would try to do something to help create a Hive tipping token that is not on #HiveEngine. 🤔 Maybe create a Hive tipping bot that would tip HIVE or HBD directly! 😆😎😅

Well, if it's feasible, and doing so would offer a notable benefit, then possibly. Haha...yes, that idea, tipping HIVE or HBD, has been discussed. It would be cool, but the tokenomics are more challenging. 😁🙏💚✨🤙

I think that a Hive tipping bot that directly tips HIVE or HBD should first be created by anyone willing to do it, then worry about the tokenomics later. 🤔 Even a 1 HIVE budget for the tipping bot can make 0.001 HIVE tips 1,000 times. 🤓😅

Perhaps, but it's good to have an idea of the feasibility of a project before it's begun. Good point about the tipping HIVE. That would be doable I think. The number of people tipping would go up fast, which would mean there would have to be a good chunk of HIVE from which to draw, especially over time. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

@borniet! You Are Alive so I just staked 0.1 $ALIVE to your account on behalf of @ tydynrain. (5/20)

The tip has been paid for by the We Are Alive Tribe through the earnings on @alive.chat, feel free to swing by our daily chat any time you want, plus you can win Hive Power (2x 50 HP) and Alive Power (2x 500 AP) delegations (4 weeks), and Ecency Points (4x 50 EP), in our chat every day.

A potential problem with @tydynrain's suggestion is that the rest-to-earn frontend might consider publishing on Hive as "not resting" and yet will require proof that the Hive user rested, so it practically won't pay anyone. 🤔🤣😂

Yes !INDEED the idea is really good, but the practical implementation of it would be incredibly hard! Unless you could use the data from a smartwatch to check on the non-activity time and/or sleeptime, and use that. But at the same that would that imply that a lot of users will not be able to use it.

Maybe the "rest-from-Hive-to-earn" idea would be easier to implement, as that should simply require the Hive user to not make any manual transaction (which will exclude only automated votes so far) on Hive using their Hive account (and only one Hive account per person is permitted to join the initiative). 🤓

Yep, Ecency via the website renders lists quite oddly. Welcome to the !INDEED fun! 😁🙏💚✨🤙

I (almost) always type markdown formatting manually whenever I type comments here on Hive. 😎 This makes me practically immune to any problem with markdown on the comment editor. 😅

So do I most of the time, too, but whether I create lists through the editor, or manually, the formatting still comes out wrong.😁🙏💚✨🤙

I wonder if you are referring to the post/comment preview or the actual content display after publishing. 🤔🤯😅

Both. It previews poorly, and it publishes poorly too. 😁🙏💚✨🤙

Does that also mean that the published post/comment also gets displayed poorly on other Hive frontends? 🤔🤯

That I don't know. I never checked outside of when I was experimenting with it on Ecency.

Yep, I see. !BEER has always been very tempermental. The script for !INDEED is still being tested, adjusted, and refined. 😁🙏💚✨🤙

I checked again and found out that your INDEED tip was indeed successful. 🤯 It's hard to see because most other Hive token tipping bots (such as !LUV and !HUG) publish their comments under the tipper's comment, not under the comment of the tipped Hive user. 😅

It's interesting, as there seems to be a little inconsistency in where the tip-call reply appears. Some INDEED calls are being missed, but on the backend the bot is functioning fine, so it appears to be the funky node issues muffing things up a bit. 😁🙏💚✨🤙

I wish I would have started this journey when I was living the vanlife in some of the most beautiful country I have ever seen in the US. Missed opportunity. But I'll get in the air soon and start hitting some good spots. I live on a 400 acre farm, so I have a ton of space to practice.
