Capturing Autumn's Ephemeral Beauty: A Drone's Perspective
There’s a brief, magical window in the fall when nature puts on a breathtaking display of color before the winds strip the trees of their leaves. This fleeting period, when the trees turn a vibrant red, is a photographer’s dream and a perfect subject for aerial photography. Three years ago, I had the opportunity to capture this phenomenon using my DJI MINI 2 drone. The result is a series of images that not only document the beauty of autumn but also highlight the unique perspective that drone photography can offer.
The Setting
The photos were taken during early fall, a time when the landscape is in transition. The green of summer is giving way to the warm hues of autumn. In Belgium, where these photos were taken, the timing of this transition is crucial. The leaves only stay on the trees for a few days before they are scattered by the wind, making the window for capturing such vivid colors very narrow.
Photo 1: The Symmetry of Nature
The first photo in the series is a top-down shot that showcases the symmetry of the landscape. The road cuts through the frame, flanked by trees in their full autumnal glory. The contrast between the lush green grass and the fiery red leaves is striking. The aerial perspective allows us to appreciate the orderly arrangement of the trees, something that is often missed at ground level.
Photo 2: The Dance of Shadows
In the second image, the shadows of the trees stretch across the green fields, creating an intricate pattern on the ground. This photo captures not only the colors of autumn but also the play of light and shadow that adds depth to the landscape. The long shadows hint at the late afternoon sun, a perfect time for capturing the rich colors of fall.
Photo 3: The Road Less Traveled
This image provides a wider view, showing the road bordered by trees in full fall colors. The perspective from the drone emphasizes the length of the road and the continuity of the tree line. It’s a reminder of how roads and nature coexist, leading our eyes through the vibrant landscape and inviting us to imagine the journey ahead.
Photo 4: Sunset Serenity
The final photo captures the serene beauty of a sunset over the fields. The sky, with its dramatic clouds and golden light, adds a dynamic backdrop to the tranquil scene below. The trees cast long shadows, and the interplay of light and dark brings out the textures of the landscape. This image encapsulates the calmness and beauty of a fall evening, offering a perfect end to the series.
The Experience
Using the DJI MINI 2 for this shoot was an exhilarating experience. The drone's stability and high-quality camera (for that time) allowed me to capture the vivid colors and intricate details of the landscape. It’s fascinating how drone photography can reveal patterns and perspectives that are impossible to see from the ground.
Conclusion
These photos are more than just images; they are a reminder of the fleeting beauty of nature. They capture a moment in time when the landscape is ablaze with color, a brief period before the onset of winter. For photographers, it's a call to seize the moment and capture the world from new perspectives. As the trees shed their leaves and the cycle of seasons continues, these photos stand as a testament to the ever-changing beauty of nature.
I hope you enjoyed this journey through my lens. Whether you’re a fellow photographer or simply a lover of nature, there’s always something new to discover and appreciate in the world around us. Happy shooting!

The sunset serenity is too beautiful 😍
Thank you very much! ;-)
Yeah, I’m a s*cker for sunsets/sunrises :-) One of the most beautiful things on earth, shown to us (almost…) every day, for free!!!! :-)
Absolutely and that's the sweet part, we don't get to pay for such beauty 😌
The best things in life are free!
Unfortunately, the second best ones cost double! 😉😂
😂🤣😂🤣 I hope they don't tax us for breathing one day 🤣
Fingers crossed!!! (And a bit afraid they will I must admit!)
Well if that time comes, I hope the masses have the balls to fight back and say enough is enough! 🙂
I sometimes kinda feel like that moment (of having the balls) is slowly but certainly coming!
It will happen eventually. The French never expected the revolution but it happened anyway.
And by some stupid events! Unexpected it all exploded! “Then let them eat cake”…
😅.... When you get away with evil, you'd almost feel you are untouchable
Exactly! But they aren’t, and never will be! 😉💪🏻
It's even sweeter because payback comes after the evil doer must have been carried away and forgotten their evil deeds. Then they'd feel really unfortunate and oppressed and that is the fun part 😂
Indeed!!!! Payback is a b* :-D

Sweet drone shots, @borniet! It's so interesting reading about how short a time that the leaves with fall color stay on the trees! In the areas where I grew up, it could be severel weeks! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙
Thanks!!!
It depends a lot on the weather, and the past few years, there’s been almost constant stormy winds in our area, especially in autumn, leaving the trees bare quite suickly, with little opportunity to fly the drone to capture the short beauty 😉🙏
Absolutely, you're most welcome! Ah, OK, I see. Now I understand your challenge there! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙
Yes indeed :-) The weather and the drone are totally incompatible here lately :-)
I've been pondering about buying a new drone, since beginning this year. If I would've bought it back then, I would've been able to fly it like, 3 or 4 times up to now :-D

I'm sure that that is a tiny bit frustrating! Is the new drone more weather-proof? 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Your drone photos capture the autumn vibes perfectly bro. It's amazing how nature's colors can be so fleeting yet mesmerizing 🤔 epic shots brother
Thank you very much!! Yeah, this drone view never ceases to amaze me!
Love those long shadows and warm sunlight on #2, so atmospheric.
Thank you! It’s indeed one of the things I love about drone photography, the ability to play even more with shadows…

Drone photography is amazing. The beauty of aerial photography never ceases to amaze. I'd love to learn how to operate one too. LOL! I think it would be great to see the beauty of one's garden from the air. An advance happy weekend...
