Je Te Laisserai Des Mots (WARNING: will make you cry)

⚠️ (WARNING: this song will make you cry...) ⚠️

I discovered this song amid another social media trend, many people have been playing it to express grief or loss... Another example of how powerfully uniting the internet can be; this song was originally released in 2010, yet here the majority of us are, only discovering it now and listening to it over a decade later.

And I'm honestly shocked that I had not found this masterpiece sooner -- this is one of the most beautiful songs that I've heard in a long time. One of those songs where you do not need words in order to understand; you can feel the heaviness of emotion within the first notes.

The original version is lovely enough on its own, but the slowed version absolutely breaks my heart...

(Which is why I am literally providing a disclaimer for it! 😅 If you are not in a good state of mind, or in a busy situation, save this for later! Or, if a good cry is what you need, plug in the headphones and settle in for this experience!)

Granted, I do not speak French (and if there are any French-speakers, feel free to correct me), but my understanding is this song could be about unrequited love, or a love that is experiencing separation, whether voluntary or otherwise (long-distance, death)...

We are painted a tranquil scene, of the singer secretly leaving notes under the door of his lover. We can picture a beautiful woman airily walking around her abode, while her voice bounces off the walls as she sings aloud to her empty house. She sits down on the couch for a moment, pulls out an old note from between the cushions, and after reading it, she embraces his words -- she embraces the singer -- with a kiss...

FrenchEnglish
Je te laisserai des motsI will leave you notes
En d'ssous de ta porteUnderneath your door
En d'ssous de les murs qui chantentUnder the singing walls
Tout près de la place où tes pieds passentNear the place where your feet pass
Cachés dans les trous de ton divanHidden in the holes of your couch
Et quand tu es seule pendant un instantAnd when you're alone for a moment
Ramasse-moiPick me up
Quand tu voudrasWhenever you want

When I listen to this song, there is still something indescribable hidden within the melody. Every piece of this song is gut-wrenching, but by the time we reach, "Ramasse-moi," we can hear the very first (and only) uplifting part of the entire song. There are almost notes of happiness tucked within it.

To me, this is hope. It is that beautiful ache that you feel inside yourself when you become engulfed by the grief, the memories, the joy... It is such an intense emotion, but it is what makes living this life so beautiful. This is what this song does for me...

(This is the original version by Patrick Watson)

That will do it for today's song! 😃 I really hope you enjoyed today's selection. It is a heavier song, but I find such immense beauty in music such as this... Thank you, and I hope you enjoy the rest of your week! 👋
