Getting to know the Cerro de Monserrate 🚃🏔️ | 📍 Bogota, Colombia.

Hola amigos viajeros, feliz Lunes e inicio de semana! Espero se encuentren bastante bien y que este fin de semana que paso hayan disfrutado y viajado muchísimo, por mi parte así lo hice, después de mucho tiempo sin viajar y aventurar tuve la oportunidad de conocer muchos sitios lindos y turísticos este fin de semana. Uno de ellos fue el cerro de Monserrate, el cual es un símbolo de la Capital de Colombia, es decir, Bogotá. La verdad antes había tenido la oportunidad de viajar a esta ciudad, pero no fue si no hasta hace unos días que tuve la oportunidad de conocer esta maravilla, de la cual por aquí les contaré mi experiencia.

I hope you are feeling well and that this weekend you have enjoyed and traveled a lot, for my part I did, after a long time without traveling and adventuring I had the opportunity to meet many beautiful and touristic places this weekend. One of them was the Monserrate hill, which is a symbol of the Capital of Colombia, that is, Bogota. The truth is that I had the opportunity to travel to this city before, but it was not until a few days ago that I had the opportunity to visit this wonder, of which I will tell you about my experience.

Junto con mi pareja y su mamá, emprendimos esta aventura desde temprano y al llegar al lugar desde la calle se puede observar como el teleférico al igual que el funicular van subiendo y bajando con turistas a bordo, así como también llega un horario donde la multitud de turistas se puede apreciar en toda la calle, para nuestra suerte decidimos comprar las boletas un día antes desde su página web. Así que al entrar solo tuvimos que hacer una corta fila y ya estábamos listos esperando el funicular que nos llevaría al cerro, hago paréntesis aquí para mencionar que uno puede escoger en que desea subir, en nuestro caso decidimos subir por el funicular para luego bajar por el teleférico.

Along with my partner and his mom, we undertook this adventure early in the morning and upon arriving at the place from the street you can see how the cable car as well as the funicular are going up and down with tourists on board, as well as a time when the crowd of tourists can be seen throughout the street, for our luck we decided to buy the tickets a day before from their website. So when we entered we only had to make a short line and we were ready waiting for the funicular that would take us to the hill, I digress here to mention that you can choose what you want to go up, in our case we decided to go up the funicular and then down the cable car.

La verdad es que a medida que el funicular iba subiendo ya se podía apreciar una vista hermosa de la ciudad de Bogotá, así que con esto ya nos estábamos emocionando cada vez más. Al llegar nos fijamos en el pequeño mapa que nos decía donde encontrábamos cada atractivo y luego de eso seguimos nuestro camino.

Contándoles un poco sobre lo que aprendí de la historia del cerro de Monserrate es que este se encuentra ubicado sobre la cordillera oriental y tiene una altitud de 3152 metros sobre el nivel del mar. También, se dice que el cerro tiene más de 16 millones de años y originalmente su nombre era cerro de las nieves el cual fue bautizado así por la comunidad indígena Muiscas los cuales le habían otorgado este nombre debido a la frecuente nubosidad que hay en el lugar.

El cerro de Monserrate se encuentra al lado del cerro de Guadalupe, este lo pudimos apreciar desde donde estábamos por lo que nos dimos cuenta que justo en lo más alto de ese cerro se encuentra una estatua de la virgen de Guadalupe.

The truth is that as the funicular was going up we could already appreciate a beautiful view of the city of Bogota, so with this we were getting more and more excited. Upon arrival we looked at the small map that told us where we found each attraction and after that we went on our way.

Telling you a little about what I learned about the history of Monserrate hill is that it is located on the eastern mountain range and has an altitude of 3152 meters above sea level. Also, it is said that the hill is more than 16 million years old and originally its name was Cerro de las nieves which was so named by the Muisca indigenous community who had given it this name because of the frequent cloudiness in the place.

The hill of Monserrate is located next to the hill of Guadalupe, this we could see from where we were so we realized that right at the top of that hill is a statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Seguimos subiendo y decidimos ir al restaurante, ya que este lugar también cuenta con restaurantes, cafeterías y tienda de postres, pero bueno, la experiencia en este lugar ya se las contaré más adelante ya que como todo en el cerro, también tiene su historia, lo que si les puedo adelantar es que puedes admirar una vista hermosa mientras disfrutas de sus deliciosos platillos.

Una vez almorzamos, continuamos con nuestra recorrido donde nos encontramos con un pozo de los deseos que según dicen los mitos de este lugar si tiras una moneda pidiendo un deseo de todo corazón, este se te cumplirá, eso si, el punto es que tengas cierta distancia al tirar la moneda y claro, nosotros no podíamos irnos sin pedir nuestro deseo.

En el camino también pudimos apreciar algunas esculturas de las estaciones del viacrucis y algo que me gustó mucho es que a medida que íbamos subiendo se iba admirando más la hermosa vista de la ciudad, el cerro de Guadalupe y también se podía sentir que el frío era cada vez más fuerte.

We continued climbing and decided to go to the restaurant, since this place also has restaurants, cafes and dessert store, but well, the experience in this place I will tell you later because like everything on the hill, it also has its history, what I can tell you is that you can admire a beautiful view while enjoying their delicious dishes.

Once we had lunch, we continued with our tour where we found a wishing well that according to the myths of this place if you throw a coin making a wish with all your heart, it will be fulfilled, the point is that you have a certain distance to throw the coin and of course, we could not leave without making our wish.

On the way we could also appreciate some sculptures of the Stations of the Cross and something that I really liked is that as we were going up we could admire the beautiful view of the city, the hill of Guadalupe and we could also feel that the cold was getting stronger.

Así como con el pozo de los deseos, no podíamos bajar del cerro sin antes entrar a la basílica santuario del señor caído de Monserrate, a la cual se le otorga este nombre ya que dentro de la iglesia se pueden observar importantes esculturas de la época colonial, entre ellas se encuentra la estatua del señor caído de Monserrate, que representa a Jesús al caer por tercera vez camino al Calvario.

También disfrutamos de un rico café para combatir un poco el frío, visitamos la plaza donde compramos algunos recuerdos para nuestros familiares y también más atrás de todo esto encontramos otros restaurantes donde se podía apreciar la comida típica de Bogotá.

As with the wishing well, we could not go down the hill without first entering the basilica sanctuary of the fallen Lord of Monserrate, which is given this name because inside the church you can see important sculptures of the colonial era, among them is the statue of the fallen Lord of Monserrate, which represents Jesus falling for the third time on his way to Calvary.

We also enjoyed a delicious coffee to combat the cold, we visited the square where we bought some souvenirs for our relatives and also further back we found other restaurants where you could appreciate the typical food of Bogota.

La verdad fue una experiencia increíble, donde caminamos muchísimo pero valió la pena, llegamos hasta lo último del cerro donde el frío ya era más fuerte y desde donde se podía obtener una mejor vista del cerro de Guadalupe.

Como pueden ver en algunas fotos, el cerro tiene decoración de Navidad, por lo que si lo visitan en estas fechas pueden ver el alumbrado por la noche ya que este cuenta con horario hasta las 10:00 pm. Mi recomendación es que si van a visitarlo suban temprano para poder recorrer todo el lugar con calma y disfrutar de todo, nosotros estuvimos desde las 2:00 pm hasta que cayó el atardecer y es que este también es otro atractivo del lugar, desde el cerro obtienes una hermosa vista del cielo con sus tonos naranjas y amarillos.

Como les mencioné al inicio, decidimos bajar en teleférico lo cual también fue una increíble experiencia ya que teníamos de vista el atardecer y las luces de la ciudad, sin duda, fue un gran día donde logramos conocer la historia de este lindo lugar y sobre todo, disfrutar de lo más destacado que tiene. The truth was an incredible experience, where we walked a lot but it was worth it, we got to the bottom of the hill where the cold was already stronger and from where you could get a better view of the Guadalupe hill.

As you can see in some photos, the hill has Christmas decorations, so if you visit at this time of the year you can see the lighting at night because it is open until 10:00 pm. My recommendation is that if you are going to visit it, go up early to be able to walk around the whole place calmly and enjoy everything, we were there from 2:00 pm until sunset and this is also another attraction of the place, from the hill you get a beautiful view of the sky with its orange and yellow tones.

As I mentioned at the beginning, we decided to go down by cable car which was also an incredible experience since we had a view of the sunset and the lights of the city, without a doubt, it was a great day where we got to know the history of this beautiful place and above all, enjoy the highlights it has.
