Potting Up Pepper Plants

▶️ Watch on 3Speak

Welcome Back, to Blue's Garden Tips: Potting Up Pepper Seedlings!

I sowed my Coral Bell Peppers Seed Jan 15th and Potted them Up March 10th. I sowed Sunbright Bell, Purple Beauty Bell, Big Red Bell, Golden Cal Bell, Lemon Drop Aji, and Sweet Banana Pepper Feb 15th, and Potted Up March 30th. I find most Bell Pepper grows faster than Sweet Banana and the Medium Hot Aji, so I potted most up now, and will wait for these two to grow larger, before potting them up. My New England gardens are Zone 6b and 7a.

I am hoping for about 65-75% germination, and after potting up and transplanting in to my Fabric Grow Bags, I am hoping for half of my seeds to reach maturity for harvest.

Potting Up Peppers for #GroVid23!

Please give this a watch and perhaps, consider giving my video a like and subscribe to my channel. I could use all the help I can get.

Usually, for the last few years, I plant about 5 varieties of pepper in 5 gallon (19 Liter) Fabric Grow Bags. Typically, one plant per bag. I am growing some new varieties: Golden California Wonder, and Big Red Bell, as well as some family favorites: Lemon Drop Aji, Sweet Banana, Coral Bell, Purple Beauty Bell, and Sunbright Bell, and Sunbright Bell Pepper.

I will probably end up transplanting between 3 and 4 of each outside, come end of April, Early May. I usually wait and see on weather, Peppers prefer more warmth than tomato, so they may go in a week AFTER the tomato. I also need to spend about a week hardening them off, to the sun. So, maybe closer to Mid May for Peppers outside.

I think this will be about a 10% increase in Pepper plants for me this year. I will see about trying to find a way to preserve some, pickle some, or dehydrate some, to help wiht my goal of closing the Hunger Gap.

Most of you know, I prefer locally grown food. It's healthier for my family, and for the planet. In fact, I prefer to grow my own food. I know what goes into my foods, and what chemicals are NOT in my food. Also, It cuts down on carbon emissions, less trucking to get fresh foods to my table.

And that makes me smile... better for the planet, better for my own family.

Wow they grow pretty quick. I thought it would take longer form them to grow, I don't really know why 😂. But vegetable plants do grow a lot quicker than my succulents 🪴

That's already bigger than what I think they should be! How fast does potatoes grow? I'm thinking about planting some potatoes and sweet potatoes.

DON'T PLANT SWEET Potato. They're yucky. EWWWWWWWW
My wife and 2 girls lvoe them. I am planting them next year.

As for Potato, from going under soil, to first seeing about 4 weeks. From going into soil, until you see the plants above soil die off? 3 and a half weeks or so. THAT's when you harvest. OR, if it is cold enough, you can wait 2-3 weeks. so, you need about 3 to 4 months, from first planting until it is freezing. For regular potato.

Sweet potato, tons of cool video on hoe to start the slips (potato slips). BUt like I said, they're EWWWW, do NOT do it.

🤣 what do you have against sweet potatoes.

We are moving into winter here in SA, I'll see if I can get a few of the potato slip bags. Or maybe just one, and see what I can get.

The pepper plants I brought in last fall are blooming! I just left them by a window and forgot about them. They have started leaving out and now blooming. The sun is finally getting a little higher in the sky here. Not sure what I will do with these plants yet. I may leave them in the pots and put them outside. I grow bell peppers, mini sweet peppers and jalapenos. The other pepper are more substantial for cooking and salads but I really enjoy the jalapenos. I eat them raw sliced or in salsas. We also started some more pepper plants inside. I'll be interested to watch as you move plants outside. Your spring is ahead of mine so I can watch and let you guide me 🙂

nice! Glad they're doing well.
I wish my season was even longer, but I am unwilling to trade that for the heat of the south!
