Preparing Seed Trays For Planting
(Edited)
For those who prefer to watch on YouTube:
It's ALMOST that time of year: Sowing Seeds Indoors! BUT First, time to get ready. I start about 2 weeks before sowing my first seeds, and prep my trays. Thoroughly cleaning and then mixing up the Seed Starter Mix! Follow along as I show my process for preparing my trays for HUNDREDS of Onion Seeds, and 72 Pepper Seeds (Maybe more?)
Most of you know, I prefer locally grown food. It's healthier for my family, and for the planet. In fact, I prefer to grow my own food. I know what goes into my foods, and what chemicals are NOT in my food. Also, It cuts down on carbon emissions, less trucking to get fresh foods to my table.
And that makes me smile... better for the planet, better for my own family.
When do you start your garden seeds?

We are debating start dates because we have a couple of vacations coming this spring 🤔 I applaud your early prep work. We usually are running back and forth to town everyday grabbing things during planting. But then again we are usually looking for an excuse to drive into town lol
i hear ya... some days I make the trip just to get out, and see the stores.
But, for me, once i plant the onion seeds, there's little to do except water. I suppose you could set up an auto watering system, if needed. With onion, you can wait, too... might as well not let them die, and go have fun on you vacations!
I was wondering when you'll be back! I'm glad you explained why you use hot water to mix into the soil 😅, I was a bit lost. It makes sense, I should start doing that. Excited to see the onions grow 😎
Fungus Gnat Eggs are in ALL store bought bagged soils. Seed Starter, Potting Soil, etc. One can also use a mix of 1 part 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, to 4 Parts water, but that gets expensive. And I find the Boiling water works great.
I do use the h2o2 mix to spritz on the trays later, if I find any fungus gnats flying.
A cheaper alternative is always a win. Still nice to know there is another option if it doesn't work. And now I've learnt something, next time I buy soil mix I'll first add hot water.
Wow! Impressive seed trays. I wish I could be learning these skills from you in one weekend!
This planting is so cool, it is not very common here because the weather is usually good almost all year round for outdoor planting, but it is much better and healthier to plant at home for consumption and for the planet, there is no doubt about it.
