Oh, love this microfiction. I wonder what the young recruits did to outsmart the veteran in firing. I'm not knowledgeable enough about firearms. This is nice!
Off the top of my head, the easiest thing they could do is to mess with his zero-ing for the weapon. Everyone has a certain way of looking at the target through your sights and your weapon needs to be adjusted to be accurate 😊.
