Greedfall is a role-playing game developed by Spiders. You play as De Sardet, a nobleman of the Merchant Congregation, who embarks on a journey to the island of Teer Fradee. The story involves combat, diplomacy, and stealth, with your decisions influencing the game's narrative and your relationship with different factions.

GAMEPLAY

Well, the action starts with having your portrait taken by an artist, which serves as a cool way to create your own character. You can choose from three distinct classes, and apply attributes and talents. In terms of controls, combat felt okay with options for melee strikes, locking on, blocking, and dodging. You can also pause the game mid-combat to select special actions such as firearms, potions, and more.

While the combat system may not be the most fluid but it does the job once you get used to it. It becomes satisfying as you defeat your enemies. Selling the loot helps you gain resources to craft new and improved items. Character progression is tied to the skill tree, unlocking perks and buffs as you level up, enhancing your physical abilities, and enabling you to reach previously inaccessible locations.

One notable aspect of Greedfall is the freedom it offers in terms of gameplay and decision-making. There is no right or wrong way to approach things, and you are free to do what you want. This level of freedom adds a personal touch and enhances the overall experience. You can also customize your clothing and weapons using a workbench, giving your character a unique visual appearance. You are not alone on your journey. You can build a team of companions over time, with two accompanying you at any given moment. You can even customize their appearance, creating a stylized group. The available options for customization are great.

One standout feature of Greedfall is its excellent writing and believable characters. Almost all conversations are interesting and engaging, thanks to the quality voice acting and well-thought-out dialogue sequences. The game presents a narrative with no right or wrong choices, and you'll have to make decisions that shape the story, and determine who you support, scold, or tell off.

The game world itself is a medieval fantasy setting with native clans competing for control of the island. The tribes have intriguing backstories, and the game explores religious themes as foreign invaders try to influence the tribes to worship their gods. The cities have a regal presentation, reflecting your noble character and the towns are visually stunning, reminiscent of the stylistic elements found in the Witcher series. The world of "Greedfall" is romantic, with beautiful landscapes, costumes, and a compelling story from beginning to end.

Graphics & Sound

Visually, the game suffers from wooden animations and the lip-syncing is inconsistent. However, these shortcomings are offset by the beautiful game world and the intricate detail on the costumes.

Sound is a standout aspect for me with wonderful voice acting. You'll hear a wide array of British and European regional accents that blend well with the setting. The music is standard fare nothing remarkable but it serves its purpose and complements the other elements of the game.

Good and Bad

What's good: The story is compelling, offering freedom of choice for a unique experience. The game world and lore are fascinating and the voice acting is excellent. The game provides a lot of depth and the customization options are very impressive.

What's Bad: The combat could have been more in-depth and the animation falls a bit behind the times and the lip-syncing is subpar.

Final Thoughts

Greedfall is a fine example of how to create a compelling and in-depth role-playing game. The story is interesting and full of twists and turns with excellent voice acting for the most part. The combat is solid and the character customization allows for a personal touch. However, what truly makes Greedfall compelling is the combination of a believable game world and the true ability to forge your own path. It took me a long time to finally play it as I initially lacked interest but once I started I was pleasantly surprised. An RPG's quality is heavily reliant on its narrative, and the narrative of Greedfall is truly exceptional. If you enjoy the genre, I highly recommend the game, as it offers an in-depth atmospheric setting and a very interesting experience.
