The Thin Line Between Justice and Vigilantism.

I would like to discuss a story that has caught my attention lately. It is a story that raises serious questions about justice and morality and how far one can go to save their loved ones.

Here is the story:

What begins as an ideal day on a South Texas ranch for one family suddenly becomes the stuff of which nightmares are made for parents. Their 5-year-old daughter is shrieking from behind a barn. The father bolts toward her, to discover a man molesting the little girl. In an instant, his mood is turned upside down. He reacts in the very way one might expect, by going after the molester.

I am not a parent, but I can imagine the rage and horror that must have coursed through this father's veins. Probably one of our strongest instincts is protecting our children. He wasn't thinking of the law or consequences at that moment, all he wanted was to rescue his daughter and to personally punish her attacker.

The result:

The assailant was beaten to death. Terrified and desperate for help, the father panicked and called 911. This 911 call is flat-out heart-wrenching. You can hear in his voice that fear, regret, and desperation when he realizes how serious it all has just become.

Now, here is the thing: no arrest of the father by local authorities occurred. A grand jury agreed that he was within his rights to use deadly force to protect his daughter.

It's a decision that pits justice against vigilantism.

On one hand, it's hard not to have some level of sympathy for the father in this case, he was defending his child against a horrific act. Texas law does provide justifications for the use of deadly force when someone is committing a sexual assault. And let's be honest, many of us might react similarly in such a situation.

But this, of course, raises the ultimate question: should we as a society condone vigilantism? Is it right for one person to act as judge, jury, and executioner in such a case?

What crossed my mind following the presentation of the case was the complexity of human emotions and actions. The father did not go out that day to kill anyone. His attorney described him as a "peaceable soul." Yet in the heat of the moment, faced with an unthinkable situation, he acted with deadly force.

This case also underlines the challenges facing rural communities.

Their ranch was so remote that the emergency services found it difficult to locate. In such places, people might feel that they need to look out for themselves just a bit more than in other regions where emergency services tend to arrive rather quickly.

I can only imagine what that would do to the family, that girl growing up, having to live with it. I hope they are getting all the support and care they may need. A tale and a striking reminder here, of the dark realities ruling our world; a story bound to make one face the uncomfortable truth that human nature, justice, and the limits of the law are inseparable.

What do you think about this case? Where does protection become justified and where does it become vigilantism? This is probably one of those debates that will go on for quite some time.
