What's right and What's not

Image is mine

Whenever the right to abortion debate comes up, people tend to be very emotional and sanctimonious about it. I know I have had this debate countless times and then I end up looking like one heartless monster without morals.

The only reason people go anti abortion is more from a religious perspective.

One vitals that people fail to realize is that pregnancies equal human beings and human beings equals societal growth and development.

The number one problem with underdeveloped society is over crowding and a population that is unproductive leading to the available resources being over stretched, of which right to abortion and the awareness of it can curb.

If you check societies where poverty is worse hit, you’d see that they have high fertility rate and low level of productivity. These societies are not productive because most of these households or women birthing these children do not have access to the basic necessities of life. Thus the children grow from a place of lack and almost zero opportunities.

If most of these women have the needed enlightenment and the assurance of safe abortion procedures, none of them would want to give birth to a child whose future is already threatened from infancy.

I am a Development Economist who also doubles as a welfare official and I can say for a fact that anti abortion is more detrimental to the Economic growth of the nation and also to the mental health of the mother.

In my opinion, family planning or preaching of abstinence is not enough to prevent unwanted pregnancies because we all know humans do not all function in the same mental capacity to listen and obey.

While the government has made provisions to curb unwanted pregnancies through family planning and the need for abstinence through sex education, they should also extend right to abortion to any woman who feels she does not have the financial capacity or mental capacity to be a mother.

It is fact that from procreation, to nurturing and caring, till the adulthood of a child’s life, the mother is worse hit.

She sacrifices her career, she sacrifices are happiness and she sacrifices her body and if she is unlucky to not have a supportive partner, she will find herself drowning in life challenges and when she’s tired of grasping straws, she starts to let go of the excess baggages and burden.

In such cases, we find children being dumped at the dump site and abandoned in orphanages. We find children being at the mercy of sexual predators because they need to survive without parents.

And I ask, if the government can give right to abortion to rape victims and mothers whose life is being threatened by the fetus, why can’t same right be extended to women who do not fit into this category but do not feel the need to keep the pregnancy due to one life challenges or the other?

One thing is that, in a bid for these less privileged women to have another short at life without the burden of motherhood, they end up in the hands of quack doctors and harmful abortion procedures.

Some people might want to argue abortion is murder and I want to ask which is worse? Terminating the fetus before it comes in contact with the world or birthing and let it die from Lack or go on to becoming a societal problem?

Then there are those who might say abortion is a risk to the woman’s life.

Fact is, abortion, like every other birthing procedure is safe when handled by professionals.

Of course it’s better to let it go before coming into the world to be dumbed at a refuse site.
Sometimes I think of what happened to all the babies that were left at the refuse sites and nobody was able to save them. Did the suffocate and die or were eaten by vultures

One died as fire was set to the refuse dump and the baby was inside in a carton. A baby boy.. Terrible experience really and I had more reasons to be pro abortion.

Quite sad indeed. Or is it the one that delivered the child herself in the house, in the presence of her 5 children from different fathers and then went on to strangle the new born, put the body in a sack and buried it in her backyard?

It was her eldest son who was 7years old that alerted the neighbors.

All these can be avoided if the government just make provision for abortion.

One thing all these over religious folks talking down on women who chose to carry out abortion fail to realize is that, this thing they call murder isn't really murder because afterall, whatever was flushed out didn't even have brain, hands, legs or even a heart. Foetuses are what's taken out and in my opinion that's okay. Bringing a child into this cruel world when there's no good means of survival all because of one nonsense talk about "abortion is murder" is stupid.

My dear do you get? Like it’s a no brainer. Nothing annoys me more than seeing people advice young less privileged women to keep an unwanted pregnancy.

Some will come with, do you know if he will be a governor or president in the future…

This people do not even factor in that people from the marginalized side of life barely get opportunities to a better life especially with increasing income inequality gap.

It's understandable that the abortion debate can evoke strong emotions. Your perspective as a Development Economist sheds light on the broader societal implications, emphasizing the importance of access to safe abortion procedures and family planning education for economic growth and maternal well-being.

Yes it has to be done in a government approved hospital. It will save us a lot as a society.

You made important points here. The nation suffers when children are being born to parents who don't have the means to take care of them or secure a better future for them.

As much as your justification for right to abortion seems nice looking, this shouldn't be advocated. It's a wrong path to follow. Have you imagined how it would look like when our young ladies are given the right to abortion? Hmmmm, I smell a more rotten society...young teen girls are getting pregnant left and right, it's been so shocking this past week..I don't want to imagine the effects of this in our society
Mehnnn, I say no to abortion even if you wake up in the middle of the night to say my opinion

But then with legalized and safe abortion, the teens will be safe and have a second opportunity to get it right. Not to mention children born into poverty will reduce, child abandonment will also reduce.

Abortion was a tool for population control in China. It is also used as a life saving procedure in hospitals in Nigeria despite it being illegal.

Even before now, women have been doing abortion back then when morality is on the high side.

There will always be abortion, risky ones at that. Making it legal and creating awareness for it will only prevent the mortality rate amongst teens and put the children birthed in a better shot at life.

Things done for the greater good is not always a walk in the park.

I understand your opinion but then given a scenario where a child ends up dead or becoming societal problem due to lack, abortion is ideal.

Well, in every debate, the parties have convincing points to back up their claim but in any case there is always the side that stands much upright eventhough it is not supported by many persons.

My dear, in the evolution of life, life begins right from conception and even if the baby in the womb has not fully developed, it is a human being and any termination of that is equal to murder. It may not be murder in the sight of the state laws but in the law of nature. I don't want to even go religious. Abortion is evil and should never be endorsed as a way of life I stand always on this ground and of course, our young ones and even couples who are not ready for babies should learn self control and cautions in their sex life.

I firmly believe in a woman's right to choose, and to answer to whatever deity she may put faith in. I am willing to consider abortion control when the father is held financially liable for 65% of the child's and mother's needs until the child reaches 18. If the mother marries, he would still be liable for his support of the child he helped create. 65% reflects the disparity between in income and accumulated wealth between men and women.
If the father is underage, the liability falls on his parents. I also need to see social safety nets that are publicly funded. If the government is going to outlaw abortion, then it needs to sustain services that give the mother a path to success, and not damn her to poverty.
Needless to say, the states here in America that have the most stringent anti-abortion laws also have the worst support services for the mothers and children.

Wow! Your approach is spot on!!!!…

Countless times I have read about Children in the American society going astray and doing drugs due to lack of parental care and failed parenting.

Very few of them go on to be fortunate and end up well.

One time the State government at my end Nigeria, brought 33 children to our orphanage. These children were recovered from an illegal orphanage where the woman use them to extort money and food items from people.

The children were looking so malnourished. Imagine our shock when we got to know they were not orphans but actually have parents who could not fend for them so they gave them away.

The issue of the man fending for the child and the mother is a fight that needs to get to Nigeria because these men go on to subject the women to a lonely life, she’s not allowed to have another partner while they, the men move on.

The moment the woman starts a relationship with another man, the little money the father was bringing for child support that is not even enough will seize… But these men will move on and go on to living their best Life.

I don't think abortion is right or wrong, it probably depends on the situation surrounding that pregnancy. If its justifiable, then a safety and legalized procedure can be employed. Imagine victims of rape getting pregnant and someone is telling them to keep the baby because abortion is wrong. See ehn, I have seen a lot of debates on this topic and everyone always have something to say.

This scenario that you gave eh, it’s the most ridiculous thing I have got to hear of in my entire life.

The most unreasonable one is that some of these rape victims go on to keep the pregnancy.

Now, how do you explain to that child when they come of age that they are a product of rape? SMH…..

Loving such child might even be so hard, it will be unfair on both parties.
