Never let go // A mother's fight against evil [ENG-ESP]

Never Let Go is a film with a post-apocalyptic story about the struggle between good and evil. The premise shows us a house in the middle of the woods where only a mother lives with her two sons Nolan and Samuel. The mother is played by Halle Berry in a great performance, one of her best if you ask me.

Nunca te sueltes es una película con una historia post-apocalíptica de la lucha entre bien y el mal. La premisa nos muestra una casa en medio del bosque donde solo habita una madre con sus dos hijos Nolan y Samuel. La madre es interpretada por Halle Berry en una grandiosa interpretación, una de sus mejores si me lo preguntan.

The characters are supposed to live in a blessed wooden house where evil cannot enter, this makes them live sheltered from the evil that spreads throughout the world. The person who built the house put some ropes that come out of it and if they are tied to the rope then they can walk through the forest without evil being able to touch them and take over their bodies, so the three characters every morning leave the house in different directions in search of any kind of food.

When one of the little ones manages to disconnect from the house for a few seconds and nothing happens to him, he begins to doubt all the stories his mother has told him, he gets the idea that she just wants to keep them locked up and surely there are more people who have survived just like them. When food becomes scarce, Nolan can think of no other solution than to leave the house in search of help.

Se supone que los personajes viven en una casa de madera bendita donde el mal no puede entrar, esto los hace vivir resguardados de la maldad que se propagó por el mundo. La persona que construyó la casa puso cuerdas que salen de ella y si se encuentran atados a la cuerda entonces pueden caminar por el bosque sin que él mal pueda tocarlos y apoderarse de sus cuerpos, de tal manera que los tres personajes todas las mañanas salen de la casa en diferentes direcciones en busca de cualquier tipo de alimento.

Cuando uno de los pequeños logra estar unos segundos desconectado de la casa y no le pasa nada empieza a dudar de todas las historias que su madre le ha contado, se hace la idea que ella lo único que quiere es mantenerlos encerrados y seguro hay más personas que han sobrevivido igual que ellos. Cuando el alimento escasea, a Nolan no se le ocurre otra solución que salir de la casa en busca de ayuda.

I don’t know if from watching so many movies we become exquisite with the stories and the way they are presented to us. I really liked this story, it has originality and a suspense that keeps you without blinking. The references to motherhood, parenting and love for a child were always present. The mother could see the evil that was approaching her children, she tried until the last moment to protect them from being contaminated, but perhaps the way she protected them made her look controlling, unhinged and the bad guy in the movie.

When a child is small you can tell him anything and he will believe it without complaining, he will be obedient because he trusts his parents blindly, but when they grow up they may have doubts and will look for their own answers, even if they do not end up as good as expected, because after all it is true the saying that the devil knows more from the old man than from the devil. But growing up brings new lessons and children should be allowed to grow up.

Another reference regarding evil is that in each of us there is evil and no matter how much we hide, in a moment of anger, disappointment, revenge we end up doing things that would not have occurred to us and at that moment we become evil. Throughout the film, evil was represented as a monster with several faces that only sought to contaminate or bring out of each character that evil that was already there inside.

No sé si al ver tantas películas nos volvemos exquisitos con las historias y la manera en la que nos la presentan. Esta historia me gustó mucho, tiene originalidad y un suspenso que te mantiene sin parpadear. Las referencias de la maternidad, la crianza y el amor por un hijo estuvieron siempre presente. La madre podía ver la maldad que se acercaba a sus hijos, trató hasta el último momento de protegerlos para que no fueran contaminados, pero tal vez la forma de protegerlos la hacia ver controladora, desquiciada y la mala de la película.

Cuando un hijo está pequeño puedes decirle lo que sea y lo va a creer sin poner nada en duda, será obediente porque confía ciegamente en los padres, pero cuando crecen pueden tener dudas y buscarán sus propias respuestas, aunque no terminen tan bien como esperen, es que al final y al cabo es cierto el dicho que dice que más sabe el diablo por viejo que por diablo. Pero crecer trae nuevas lecciones y a los hijos hay que dejarlos crecer.

Otra referencia con respecto a la maldad es que en cada uno de nosotros hay maldad y no importa cuánto nos escondamos, en un momento de ira, decepción, venganza terminamos haciendo cosas que no hubiéramos pensado y en ese momento nos convertimos en malos. En toda la película la maldad fue representada como un monstruo con varios rostros que lo único que buscaban era contaminar o sacar de cada personaje esa maldad que ya estaba ahí a dentro.

All of the above is the metamessage that for me is what they wanted to convey, but told in a way that each scene led to the next with suspense but not the kind that makes you pull your hair out, with hidden messages, in a desolate environment, living barely, with dirty clothes bigger than them, where the only characters apart from the evil world were the mother and her two children.

The ending can have several interpretations, but since in my perception it was a metaphorical story, then I’m inclined to go with the last thing evil said: I just took away what was already there. I recommend this movie, maybe you will see other things that I didn’t see or feel, maybe I just saw it with a mother’s eyes.

Todo lo anterior es el metamensaje que para mí es lo que se querían transmitir, pero fue contado de manera que cada escena llevaba a la siguiente con suspenso pero no del que te hace halarte los cabellos, con mensajes ocultos, en un ambiente desolado, viviendo a duras penas, con ropa sucia más grande que ellos, donde los únicos personajes además de la maldad de mundo era la madre y sus dos hijos.

El final puede tener varias interpretaciones, pero como en mi percepción fue una historia metafórica, entonces me inclino por lo último que dijo la maldad: Yo solo saqué lo que ya estaba ahí. Les recomiendo está película, puede ser que vean otras cosas que yo no vi o que no sentí, tal vez solo la vi con los ojos de madre.
