There used to be a time that I did this quite often... but the ear and brain is still there, even if the skills are a little rustier than they used to be.

So, for a concert that is coming up in a month or so, we need some sort of interesting finisher that will use everyone in the ensemble. Given that it is a Classical-era concert... the stuff that my wife prefers, whereas I'm much more at home in the Baroque era... the music is a bit less interesting. Shhhhh... don't tell my wife that!

Definitely, it is much less bizarre and weird... Baroque music is a bit all over the place, there are lots of really interesting gems that you wouldn't know about if you thought it was all Bach and fugues... and unfortunately, most classical musicians only know about Bach and fugues, and so they are pretty much at sea in the era of the Baroque... especially without lots of instruction on how to play the notes!

Anyway, enough of modern classical bashing! I went on a bit of a hunt to see if I could find something really interesting for the finisher... and I stumbled across some interesting Eastern European pieces by composers from Hungary and Romania... a lot of it sounds quite gypsy-like, with harmonies that are decidedly classical, but with a sort of "unusual" feel with lots of non-traditional blue-ish notes. It sounds like folk music has had a run in with Classical-era instruments!

I tried hunting around to see if I could get the original facsimile copies of the music... my usual places to find these things weren't successful, and our music generally is already obscure enough to not be usually published by the music publishing houses. So, it is often straight to the libraries and foundations that hold the original, and usually the ONLY copy of the written music.

... sadly, most of Europe is in its summer mode. And the libraries/foundations aren't doing anything until about mid September, which is after the August concert.

That means, I'm straight into transcribing the two short dances by ear onto paper... with the little rewards of a chip every now and then... and some skittles when I finish a section.

I did manage to finish one of the dances this afternoon... and I'll move on and complete the second one tomorrow. With all the tax and additional administrative stuff incoming, it is probably best if I get these things out of the way as fast as possible! Out of mind, and ready to play!
