Tidying up the workspace...

Tidying up the workspace... .jpg

We have a guest room that doubles as a workspace with my nice little mini-ATX build serving as my desktop... and when we moved into this place, I did use this space quite a bit... but as guests have stayed, and this room got more use, either from guest musicians or from family... well, it became less and less convenient to have this as my main computing space. And with each stay... more and more stuff got offloaded to my laptop until the current situation... where this computer is at least 6 months behind on work syncing and updates.

So, I've made the decision to dump this workspace... ditch the desk and all of that, and move the rig out to the TV area where it would serve as a streaming and media station... and also double as a family-oriented Steam machine. Speaking of which, I will really have to try out the new Steam Family options... I really want to start sharing my game collection with my kids, and start putting the beginning touches on steering them away from the Nintendo console and towards the heavy games of the PC Master Race!

Anyway... if I get rid of this station, then our guest room gets lots larger... and we can also have it as a hangout room with books and beanbags when it isn't in use as a guest room. Also, my wife wants to eventually knock out the wall and make the dining area much larger... I'm less keen on that, but I'm not sure that my ideas will prevail...

When I floated the idea of moving the computer to my wife, she (and the kids were opposed...)... after a lot of back and forth, I realised that they thought that the monitor WAS the computer (in addition to the actual computer mini-tower)... and I had to explain that the TV would be the screen for the computer! Sigh... I often forget how techno-illiterate my wife can be...

So, now... I have the go ahead to shift this rig... and then I can clear all the accumulated crap that has been dumped onto the desk. Much of it is just a matter of filing away... but there is also a lot of stuff that can immediately go straight into the bin. Hmmm... and then there is the matter of all the stuff that I stored UNDER the desk... old laptops, a spare NAS, and lots of interesting tools and cables.

First things first... update the computer, relocate... then deal with the rest of the mess!

It’s amazing how a space can get cluttered and out of control! I keep tackling various spaces in the house — rooms, cabinets, closets. One day we will downsize and I dread having to do it all at once.

If you knock out the wall to make the dining room bigger, will you give up your guest room? Doesn’t seem like a good trade since you have a lot of guests!

Yeah, it would mean that we lose the guest room... but my wife thinks that it is a better compromise, and then the kids will just lose their room for a little bit!

At least you have a plan, then! I always hate giving up a room. But opening out a space and feeling less cramped while hosting dinners could be very nice!

I am trying to find a place in the house where I am more comfortable, so that I can work better without anyone around to distract me.
Greetings @bengy

Yes, it is great to be able to find a place to call your own... your own quiet space, and then also a little bit of an area to clutter up with your own stuff!
