Redoing the Rock Mulch

Sigh... this is a job that I should have done properly the first time around. Around the carport area, I wanted to lay down some rock mulch (river gravel) so that we could suppress grass and weeds whilst keeping the wood stuff a bit further away from the house itself. And that was a great idea, I had lots of river gravel delivered... and I weeded and then put it down. And then I read afterwards, that I should have put a weed mat down first to help with the suppression!

Damn it... I was hoping that I had gotten away with a half-done job... but nope, the weeds and grass started poking through. Which meant that I now had the annoying job of scraping up the river gravel, laying down the weedmat, and then putting the gravel back on again. Sigh... So, that is this coming week's job. Well, at least a part of the area will be... I've been slowly going at it, and it might be just the sort of thing that just drags out a bit... a little bit at a time.

For the weedmat, I'm usin a biodegradable version instead of plastic. It does mean that it will be gone in a few years, but the plastic seems to get shredded anyway and will require redoing as well... but leaving shards everywhere instead.

Meanwhile, our silverbeet has gone completely bonkers! We are now giving away lots of it to family... in exchange for cardboard boxes that we will use for the wood chip mulching! Our kids think that we should sell the excess instead... haha, I prefer to have the cardboard!

Meanwhile, we are still gathering ideas for the low to mid level shrubbery and cover to help replace our wattles that got taken down. This pistachio tree was recommended to me... and it is apparently easy to grow and comes out quite nice and leafy, and not too big. No nuts... but it is more about the cover and shade. One option...

Meanwhile, my wife has been planting and potting some small ornamental things to go around the patio and open area. Something a little nice to look at...

... and something nice to eat! Some strawberries have gone into the various pots around the same area as well. I'm a little dubious about the survivability here, there are lots of snails in this area, and they have tended to shred our tomato and eggplants that were planted here in previous seasons. However, this time we will keep a better eye on them... and spread out the egg shells!

In the past, I had put the strawberries in these hanging baskets, but now they have been converted to be flowerbeds instead... They had proved to be too hot and exposed for the strawberries... perhaps these will do better?
