Pre-Spring Blooms and some Garden Work

Pre-Spring Blooms.jpg

Spring is definitely around the corner... the worst of the chills seems to have passed us now, and with the warmer weather, our garden has started sprouting up some nice colours! And I guess I am indulging in my middle-aged garden pottering nature... I sort of like just wandering around our block... just inspecting and fixing tiny little things after the school run before settling in to do some proper garden work!

Each year, I do wonder if I will take this wattle down... it is growing and a crazy sideways angle, and the main trunk is split with half of it decaying, and I just don't know how long it will last... I probably should prune it back significantly so that the weight isn't so weirdly distributed... but then, every year... it bursts into this amazing display of yellow... and I leave it alone!

Pre-Spring Blooms.jpg

I had almost missed this little red flower... it was on the underside of one of the newer plants that we had planted in the front corner area. I can't remember what type of plant it was, but it was a native like most of our plants... and these delicate red fingers are lovely! I hope it does end up producing more, and on the top side of the plant where it is more easily seen!

A little purple splash in front of the vibrant yellow of the first wattle tree. You could easily miss this one due to the bright display behind it!

... and along the driveway... more yellow, but of a different sort. Still the bright yellow... but with these sort of fairly ordinary looking flowers. I have always wondered about this bush as well, whether or not it is worth keeping... it is colourful, but the flowers are just so ordinary!

Then to an interesting display near the letterbox. All the blooms of this plant are tight up close to the stems and branches.... but an interesting colour and shape!

Now through to near the front door... with this bush that always attracts birds for some reason! I wonder if it is a honey-blossom of some sort, or if the birds are finding insects that like the blooms? Hard to tell... but there are always birds in the bush, and an abundance of strange insect eggs.

Pre-Spring Blooms.jpg

A much more subdued yellow for this wattle tree... still pleasant, but less vibrant, but in an interest spray shape. This was the wattle that had dropped a large branch a couple of months back. I will have to prune this one so that the branches aren't too end-heavy!

ARGHGHGHGHGHH.... I had thought I had won over the passionfruit vines... but in my pottering around, I saw this thicker vine hidden next to a different plants main stem. Immediately, my pottering stopped and I went straight to get a trowel and gloves. My nemesis had found a way back into my garden... and it was up the bush and already netting down a nearby tree branch! How had I missed this???

So, I did get it out... and with it, carefully extracting out the large root network that it was attached to. I hope that this has dealt the underground passionfruit network a big blow... I will have to keep an eye out in the coming spring weather to stay on top of any shoots that I see.

Beautiful shots. We are on the opposite end of things here. The nights are getting cooler and I expect stuff will start dying off pretty soon. Maybe another month or so.

Ah, it will be nice to have that swap! It has been a bit too cold on this side of the planet... although, I do hope that doesn't mean that we will get a crazy fire season.

I hope that isn't the case as well. The rapid expansion of people into some of these areas has made fires almost impossible to manage.

With everything in full bloom like that I'd say that spring was definitely on the cards

I think this one is a pincushion hakea?

Those passionfruit vines are so persisant - worse though are hops!

Oh, that is what it is? It now has lots more of the blooms, and it looks pretty awesome! Passionfruit.... my Australian garden nemesis... my Dutch one was the blackberry.
