Mulching Again!
... and with some of the large trees and wattles taken down, we now have a huge pile of wood mulch that needs to be dealt with! Thankfully, we still have large areas of uncovered land that does need to be covered up so that the grass and weeds don't get out of control... and even more so now that the cover of the wattles has gone and the large areas are now receiving a full dose of Sun!
So, a small start this morning... laying out the cardboard before spreading out the wood mulch on top of it. Suppressing the little stuff and hopefully decaying into a rich soil top layer! We have run out of cardboard though... so, I will have to make a visit to the recycling cages again to replenish my stock!
Whilst laying out the cardboard... I start to notice that there are a few small (and not so small) stumps that need to be dealt with. Probably not that big a deal, but I do like to remove them so that the cardboard sits properly on the ground! The little ones aren't a problem... it just takes some good leverage and they will pop out easy enough...
However, some of the larger ones need a season or two in the ground to dry out and get a bit brittle before I can tackle them properly. This will be one for the following week... it is pretty dry, so if I can get under it, it should come apart easily enough. Already a few strong whacks with the mattock chipped off chunks of it... hopefully it isn't a haven for termites though!
Meanwhile, our once a fortnight gardener has started to "expand" his role and made some interesting forays into landscaping our garden a bit. We sort of prefer that we do it ourselves, as we can do what we want to do... but he keeps starting things and we have to keep subtly stopping them.
This rock border was built up by my wife a year ago... and for some reason, he thought it would look better if it alternated with pavers? Well, I needed up moving the rocks back and the pavers out again... Sigh...
The pavers did look better on this area near the garage though.... but again, we took out the rocks and kept it as a paver thing only. I will have to return back to this area to take up the little rocks and put down as weedmat though. Not looking forward to that... a reminder to do things right the first time.
... and not everything is just chores in the garden though! The bottlebrushes are breaking out in vibrant reds again! A nice joyful splash of colour!

Looking good! Smart putting down the cardboard first! My wife and I skipped mulching this past year, but we are going to have to do it extra next year now! I think I usually have to buy about a truckload each spring for our backyard.
