Mobile first world?
I've heard this so many times in the past decade or so, where news articles and columns are written about how we are in the post-PC world, with laptops and desktop computers being phased out of modern digital use by mobiles and tablets. Honestly, I'm a hard core PC person as well as a tech need, and I love my tablets and mobile devices to death... But they are limited as all hell, at least for the things that I do digitally.
I'm the guy who has a desktop at home, and a decently powered laptop for when I'm travelling. But this last week, I've been away from home and my laptop died a horrific death. In fact, I'm pretty sure it is not recoverable sadly, and I have a new one waiting for me to pick up when I get back home.
But, I was forced into a mobile first sort of lifestyle for the last week... And I have griped about it for most of the week, much to the mild annoyance of my wife.
So, when my laptop went down... I was left with a large format e-reader and a decent but aging mobile phone as my only digital devices. And as a tech nerd, trust me, I felt weirdly incomplete! On the other hand, I'm also travelling without my violins as well... So, even more incomplete!
I had hoped to get some administration, publicity, and other work done while I was away. Website needed updating, and publicity pictures and designs for the coming year... As well as program selection and planning, and compiling all the scores that would be needed. Plus, getting some our recordings out to YouTube and Soundcloud and all of that sort of thing...
But all of that is best described as being a right pain in the arse or virtually impossible on a mobile device. Some of the score and music stuff was possible, but horribly slowly in comparison to a mouse and keyboard and multiple screens and windows...
Next up, posting on Hive has been also difficult... Again a problem of working screen space that just makes everything much much slower. And not to mention, the constant struggle with the bloody autocorrect! Plus the slight lagginess when dealing with photos. So, that has put a comp in my ability and desire to write...
And then, we get to emailing, and the mobile is fine for short two sentence replies (which is what I normally use it for)... But a right pain for anything longer or more detailed. Especially when dealing with attachments that have information that needs to be put into calenders or other things. And booking travel has also been a touch more difficult than it needed to be...
Aaargh, and don't get me started on the near avoidance of any semblance of a coherent file structuring system!
And any decent crypto stuff is either hobbled or difficult... I had hooked to tidy up a few things, but again, it will have to wait...
So, many things that I've hoped to have done this week have been placed on a week-long hold... I hate leaving things unaddressed... I like to knock off most things as soon as they come in so that they aren't sitting around... Or to at least properly triage and have them ready to be worked on. This last week had felt like impotent chaos that is building up a backlog of things to do.
On the plus side, the large format e-reader is getting a bit of a workout as a decent second screen... And I'm reading a lot of books and comics on it as well.
But I can't wait to have a proper laptop to work on again in a couple of days!
Mobile first my arse, it feels like it is a way to put things off as they just get moved difficult and annoying to do!
