Hydrogen- the most abundant element in the universe! -Part 08-
Alkali and alkaline-earth metal hydrides contain hydrogen in the form of the hydride ion H-, and during igneous electrolysis of hydrides, this ion is discharged at the anode. The existence of the hydride ion H- raises the question of whether or not it might not function as an anion in more complex compound bodies than metal hydrides. In his study of carbonyl hydride and iron H2Fe(CO)4, G. Wilkson showed that hydrogen is physically connected to the atom of iron.
Geoffrey Wilkinson
The investigation of complex cobalt cyanides has produced even more convincing findings. A yellow-colored compound is produced when a cobalt cyanide solution (which is green in color) is reduced by a sodium amalgam. This compound was initially mistaken for a monovalent cobalt complex. In actuality, this substance includes a hydrogen anion.
- Wilkinson was successful in proving the existence of hydrogen-metal bonds in specific rhenium compounds using the proton resonance technique.
The existence of the unstable system composed of a positron and an electron was discovered through the study of the elementary particle properties. This system essentially creates a new atom called Positronium (Ps).
a positron and an electron orbiting around a common mass.
Positronium only lasts for 10 to the power minus 7 to 10 to the power minus 10 seconds after it is formed before we observe its annihilation and instead of this atom, we obtain two quanta. This system is intriguing because positronium's lifetime and physical characteristics are influenced by its chemical surroundings, i.e. what the particles around it are made of. Additionally, research into the behavior of positronium may reveal important details about its surroundings, or be used to further chemical studies.
