Come visit Liberty Island with me | My adventures in New York, USA.

Today I bring you a tour of Liberty Island which is located in New York, south of Manhattan.

That was my first solo trip to such a faraway place and every time I look back on it, I conclude that I chose the best destination to start what would be my future solo travel adventures. It was a huge place but at the same time safe (I experienced it that way), and it offered a lot of attractions to visit, plus expensive prices. All this led me to learn a lot on that first trip, which ended up becoming a crash course for Latin American solo female travelers (the origin is important because women from other parts of the world experience solo travel in other ways).

Ven a visitar la Isla de la Libertad conmigo | Mis aventuras en Nueva York, USA.

Hola a todos los queridos amigos de la comunidad de Pinmapple en la extraordinaria plataforma de Hive!

Hoy les traigo un paseo por la Isla de la Libertad que se encuentra en Nueva York, al sur de Manhattan.

Aquel fue mi primer viaje sola a un lugar tan lejano y cada vez que lo recuerdo, concluyo en que elegí el mejor destino para dar inicio a lo que serían mis futuras aventuras de solo travel. Era un lugar inmenso pero al mismo tiempo seguro (yo lo viví de esa manera), y ofrecía una gran cantidad de atractivos que visitar, sumado a precios caros. Todo ello me llevó a aprender mucho en aquel primer viaje, que se terminó convirtiendo en un curso intensivo para mujer viajera sola latinoamericana (es importante la procedencia porque las mujeres de otras partes del mundo viven el viajar solas de otras maneras).

That time I bought tickets to see and visit different tourist attractions, among which was the visit to Liberty Island, which is precisely where the Statue of Liberty is located.

My ticket was not to enter the crown, which is something that many travelers do, but it was to take the ferry that would take me from Manhattan to the island, leaving from Battery Park.

I was staying at the Vanderbit YMCA on 47th Street and Second and Third Avenues, and from there I walked to Battery Park.

Aquella vez compré tickets para ver y visitar diferentes atractivos turísticos, entre los que se encontraba la visita a la Isla de la Libertad, que es justamente donde se encuentra la Estatua con el mismo nombre.

Mi ticket no consistía en ingresar a la corona, que es algo que muchos viajeros hacen, sino que era para tomarme el ferry que me trasladaría desde Manhattan a la isla, partiendo desde Battery Park.

Yo me hospedaba en el Vanderbit YMCA que se encuentra sobre la calle 47 y la Segunda y Tercera avenida, y desde allí me fui caminando hasta Battery Park.

When I arrived, there was a line to stand in, as was naturally the case in New York in 2018 before the pandemic, and I guess currently everything is back to normal.

Although I had to wait quite a bit, in the meantime I entertained myself by taking some pictures, which are the ones I share with you throughout this post.

As I told you, since it was the first time I was traveling alone to a destination as far away from my hometown and as interesting as New York, the least I thought about was practicality, so I took a lot of luggage and went out several times with my Canon Rebel T5i camera, something that although I have taken on my trips, in the end I rarely end up using it because of the weight and discomfort that carrying it generates.

Cuando llegué, había que hacer una fila, como ocurría naturalmente en Nueva York en el año 2018 antes de la pandemia, y supongo que actualmente todo ha regresado a la normalidad.

Aunque tuve que esperar bastante, mientras tanto me entretuve tomando unas fotos, que son las que comparto con ustedes a lo largo de este post.

Tal como les comenté, al tratarse de la primera vez que viajaba sola a un destino lejano a mi ciudad natal y tan interesante como Nueva York, en lo que menos pensé fue en la practicidad, así que me llevé muchísimo equipaje y salí varias veces de paseo con mi cámara Canon Rebel T5i, algo que aunque posteriormente he llevado en mis viajes, al final pocas veces termino usando por el peso e incomodidad que me genera cargarla.

The thing is that the other day, remembering my adventures, I found these images in a folder on my computer and decided to share them on Hive.

That visit to the Statue of Liberty, I remember that it stole many, many sighs, and as it took me to see a landscape where water and sky were predominant, I think it was in that experience when I first felt the beautiful connection with myself when traveling alone.

There was a moment, while looking at one of the bridges and wondering if it was Manhattan or Brooklyn, where a boat "hypnotized" me, and there I understood that this was the place where I had to be at that moment.

Then, something brought me back to earth again, and that's when I took the following photos.

La cuestión es que el otro día, recordando mis aventuras, encontré estas imágenes en una carpeta de mi ordenador y decidí que iba a compartirlas en Hive.

Aquella visita a la Estatua de la Libertad, recuerdo que me robó muchísimos suspiros, y como me llevó a ver un paisaje donde predominaban el agua y el cielo, creo que fue en esa experiencia cuando sentí por primera vez la hermosa conexión conmigo misma al viajar sola.

Hubo un momento, mientras miraba uno de los puentes y me preguntaba si sería el de Manhattan o el de Brooklyn, en donde una embarcación me “hiptonizó”, y allí comprendí que ese era el lugar en donde tenía que estar en ese momento.

Luego, algo me trajo a la tierra de nuevo, y fue cuando tomé las siguientes fotos.

Something very beautiful that I also enjoyed throughout that visit was the presence of seagulls. As I have already mentioned in some other post, I love these birds, and they accompanied them from the queue, to the ferry trip, and then to Liberty Island itself, where I took the opportunity to take several photos of them.

Algo muy hermoso de lo que también disfruté en toda aquella visita, fue la presencia de gaviotas. Como ya he mencionado en algún otro post, amo a estas aves, y las mismas acompañaron desde la fila, hasta el viaje en ferry, y luego en la misma Isla de la Libertad, donde aproveché para tomarles varias fotos.

The best moment was undoubtedly when I came across the statue. I had been following it since the ferry with a lot of dedication, while I discovered the intrigue that it generated in me to get close to the famous "Statue of Liberty". However, it was when I was practically under it that I felt something in the pit of my stomach, like butterflies, as if something very important was before me (it was clearly something of great importance).

I was never a lover of the United States or New York, I want to make this clear. For me it is a country that generates a lot of curiosity in its different cities, but this feeling I had at that moment did not respond to a kind of fanaticism.

Despite this, I have to admit that New York became my first lover in a way. And I myself became my lover for the first time in that city.

Although that was my first trip alone so far away, I had previously gone to Chile for 3 days alone, because I had ended a very intense relationship and I needed to disconnect from my city.

But that first trip was very exploratory, I knew nothing about traveling alone.

New York dazzled me and allowed me to meet myself, go out to dinner with me, go for a walk with me, speak in another language (or try to), encourage me to meet people, take care of myself, know my own tastes beyond the tourist commitment that I tried to cover due to inexperience.

El mejor momento fue sin dudas cuando me topé con la estatua. La venía siguiendo desde el ferry con mucha dedicación, mientras descubría la intriga que me generaba acercarme a la famosa “Estatua de la Libertad”. Sin embargo, fue cuando estuve prácticamente debajo de ella el momento en el que sentí algo en la boca del estómago, como mariposas, como si algo muy importante estuviese ante mi (era algo claramente de mucha importancia).

Nunca fui amante de Estados Unidos o Nueva York, quiero aclarar esto. Para mi es un país que me genera mucha curiosidad en sus diferentes ciudades, pero esta sensación que tuve aquel momento no respondía a una especie de fanatismo.

A pesar de esto, tengo que reconocer que Nueva York se convirtió en mi primer amante de algún modo. Y yo misma me convertí en mi amante por primera vez en aquella ciudad.

Aunque ese fue mi primer viaje sola tan lejos, antes había ido a Chile 3 días sola, porque había terminado una relación de pareja muy intensa y necesitaba desconectarme de mi ciudad.

Pero aquel primer viaje fue muy exploratorio, no sabía nada de viajar sola.

Nueva York me dejó deslumbrada y me permitió el encuentro conmigo, salir a cenar conmigo, salir a pasear conmigo, hablar en otro idioma (o intentarlo), animarme a conocer personas, cuidarme, conocer mis propios gustos más allá del compromiso de turista que por inexperiencia intenté cubrir.

Now that I am sharing this, I think the Statue of Liberty generated that in my body because it represented the magnitude of that step. It was as if life was showing me the immensity of the step I had taken, a step that was the first of what would be a beautiful path.

And something that really blew me away in that majestic monument was the size of the people in the statue. If you look closely, you'll see sort of little dots, well. They are people, hehe.

Ahora que estoy compartiendo esto, creo que la Estatua de la Libertad generó eso en mi cuerpo porque representaba la magnitud de aquel paso. Era como si la vida me mostrara la inmensidad del paso que había dado, paso que era el primero de lo que sería un hermoso sendero.

Y algo que me dejó boquiabierta concretamente en aquel majestuoso monumento, fue el tamañito de las personas en la estatua. Si miran con detenimiento, verán una especie de puntitos, bueno. Son personas, jeje.
