A short film to delight you: The wonderful story of Henry Sugar

Today I'll tell you about a short film created by Roald Dahl I recently saw on Netflix that, if many of the productions I've been sharing with you have surprised me, this one did too, but this one really did, haha.

It was like a next level, because the short film is basically about the goodness of Yoga, but I never imagined it was about that, so it was directly a delight: short, original, concrete and with Yoga in the middle, a wonder. I chose to watch it because I saw a man levitating in the Netflix promo image, heh.

Although the way they tell this story made me a little nervous at first because they use that technique where the character talks to the screen, I quickly became familiar with the strategy and got hooked on the production. It was 25 minutes in when I thought it hadn't even been 10.

Hoy les comentaré un cortometraje creado por Roald Dahl que recientemente vi en Netflix que, si muchas de las producciones que les he estado compartiendo me han sorprendido, esta lo hizo también, pero esta lo hizo de verdad, jaja.

Fue como un siguiente nivel, porque el cortometraje es básicamente sobre las bondades del Yoga, pero jamás me imaginé que tratara de eso, por lo que fue directamente un deleite: breve, original, concreto y con Yoga en el medio, una maravilla. Elegí verlo porque vi a un hombre levitando en la imagen promocional de Netflix, je.

Aunque la manera de contar esta historia me puso un poco nerviosa al principio porque utilizan esa técnica en donde el personaje le habla a la pantalla, rápidamente me familiaricé con la estrategia y me enganché con la producción. Llevaba 25 minutos cuando yo pensé que no habían pasado ni 10.

This is a true story according to the production, however, Henry Sugar is a fictitious name for the man in question and they comment that they cannot expose his identity, so it is up to each one whether they want to believe it or not.

Basically the short film is about a millionaire who didn't make much of his life and only had money because he had inherited it from his father. One day the man finds a very thin book in a meeting with other millionaires, and somehow this copy catches his attention, so he opens it and starts reading it.

Esta es una historia real según comentan en la producción, sin embargo,Henry Sugar es un nombre ficticio para el hombre en cuestión y comentan que no pueden exponer su identidad, así que queda un poco a cuenta de cada uno si quiere creerlo o no.

Básicamente el cortometraje trata sobre un millonario que no hacía demasiado de su vida y solamente tenía dinero porque lo había heredado de su padre. Un día el hombre encuentra un libro muy delgado en una reunión con otros millonarios, y de alguna manera este ejemplar llama su atención, por lo que lo abre y comienza a leerlo.

The story the book presents is about a yogi, an Indian Yoga practitioner who can see with his eyes closed and heavily blindfolded. His practice was not specifically based on asanas, i.e. physical postures, but transcended the body. This man practiced with his mind, which is the most difficult thing in Yoga and is really his ultimate goal (it is somewhat more complex but this post is not about Yoga). In the book that Henry finds, it explains how to achieve such ability, so the millionaire is given the task of achieving it and devotes more than 3 years to this, obtaining satisfactory results.

La historia que el libro presenta es sobre un yogi, un practicante de Yoga de la India que puede ver con los ojos cerrados y sumamente vendados. Su práctica no se basaba específicamente en asanas, es decir posturas físicas, sino que trascendía el cuerpo. Este hombre practicaba con su mente, que es lo más difícil en Yoga y es en verdad su objetivo final (es algo más complejo pero este post no es sobre Yoga). En el libro que Henry encuentra, se explica cómo alcanzar tal habilidad, por lo que el millonario se da a la tarea de lograrlo y dedica más de 3 años a esto, obteniendo resultados satisfactorios.

Opinion

I find it fascinating. Already many people know the benefits of Yoga at this level and many people practice it. To achieve these abilities the important thing is not in the body but in the mind. There are cases of yogis and yoginis throughout history who have levitated, who have lived without eating, who have decided to leave their body and have teleported, among other examples, which are not recorded in Netflix productions but in books of masters who have been given the task of finding these beings, one of them is Paramahansa Yogananda.

Me parece fascinante. Ya muchas personas conocen las bondades del Yoga en este nivel y mucha gente lo practica. Para alcanzar esas habilidades lo importante no está en el cuerpo sino en la mente. Hay casos de yogis y yoginis a lo largo de la historia que han levitado, que han vivido sin comer, que han decidido abandonar su cuerpo y que se han teletransportado, entre otros ejemplos, que no están registrados en las producciones de Netflix sino en libros de maestros que se han dado a la tarea de encontrar a estos seres, uno de ellos es Paramahansa Yogananda.

I love that they have made this short film, although this talking to the screen may prevent audience retention (I think), the production itself is very dynamic. It is short so the person can think: "well, now, I finish watching it", and this seems to me a very good strategy to get a message across that was hidden by doctrines, religions and ideologies, which is how powerful the human mind is, which is one of the messages of Yoga.

I like that the short film presents how the application of this ability can have merely individualistic and materialistic purposes (for those who "misuse" it), and how this misuse generates what we know as "bad karma", so it can be redirected and give this gift a humanitarian objective, which is what finally happens in the film.

Me encanta que hayan hecho este cortometraje, aunque esto de hablarle a la pantalla puede evitar que se retenga audiencia (creo yo), la producción en sí es muy dinámica. Es corta por lo que la persona puede pensar: “bueno, ya, la termino de ver”, y esto me parece una estrategia muy buena para lograr que llegue un mensaje que quedó oculto por doctrinas, religiones e ideologías, que es cuán poderosa es la mente humana, que es uno de los mensajes del Yoga.

Me gusta que el corto presente cómo la aplicación de esta habilidad puede tener fines meramente individualistas y materialistas (para quienes la utilizan “mal), y cómo este mal uso genera lo que conocemos como “mal karma”, por lo que se puede redireccionar y darle a este don un objetivo humanitario, que es lo que finalmente ocurre en el film.
