My first impression of Genesis League Goals

I've been really busy the past couple of days and haven't even had time to write anything here. It has been strange seeing all these things going on and not being able to participate but today, I finally took a few seconds to look at the game.

Prior to actually playing the game, I've seen a couple of reviews about the game and generally speaking, it doesn't seem like people are pleased with the outcome. For a game that has taken so long to produce and finally come to light, a lot of the community seems to be underwhelmed.

I try not to base my opinions on the leanings of others, so I decided to take a gander for myself. What is it about this game that's gotten everyone's panties in a bunch and has @lordbutterfly writing a moderately scathing review.

Still fresh

I think this project is going to take some adjusting from the community. Most players will take time to adapt to the interface and will need time to feel their way around the platform.

From my perspective, it really feels all too new for me but that's largely because I haven't actually done a lot of research into the game. In any case, I still managed to set up my team without actually understanding the tactical undertones of the game that I'll need to be successful.

Other than the gameplay, the platform itself is still in dire need of tweaks that will make navigation easier. One such tweak is to add a tracker that shows trading activities in your wallet.

It doesn't feel like football

I don't think I'm eligible to play the game and frankly speaking, I don't feel eager to play as well. As a fan of football, I have to say that it generally doesn't give off the vibe of the game I've spent most of my life loving.

First of all, football is an 11-a-side game with players having a variety of traits that make the game so interesting. It is for this reason that football is the most watched sports activity in the World and is revered by faithful from all corners of the planet.

The number of players on each team ensures a variety of tactical tweaks that a team can make. It means teams can use a variety of formations with attacking, defensive or neutral tactics in a match.

Teams can switch up from attack to defence during play to counter or outwit their opponent. So, for example, I could employ a high press system with a holding midfielder as my "10" to ensure I cut out the opponent's passing lanes and end up in dangerous attacking situations.

Unfortunately, what we have in Genesis League Goals is a watered-down version of the sport. The game doesn't look anything like football and while it does have certain aspects of the game, I am not enthused about playing it.

Beyond the number of players on the pitch, the Beta version of the game also shows a very rigid tactical system that ensures players MUST use 2 defenders, two midfielders and two strikers. That, on its own, shows an inflexibility that is the exact opposite of what football should represent.

I should be able to use only one defender if I want. I should be able to make tactical switches to my formation instead of always relying on a 2-2-2 setup that is mandated by the game.

More to come

I'd hate to believe that this is the finished project. Now I know making games aren't easy but with all the time and support that they've had, I was hoping to play something that looked more like actual football.

On a positive note, the game is mobile-friendly and that means it stands a good chance to become fairly addictive. At the end of the day, the most important thing for an investor is that product is useful.

From the videos I've seen though, there's one small problem and Lordbutterfly also highlighted it in his review. It is the issue with the fact that the game only prioritises the passage of play where the ball is currently and not the whole field.

In Summary

If you're a proper football fan that wants to get a blockchained experience of the beautiful game, I suggest you lower your expectations. This game takes certain bits from the sport we love but for the most part, it is not football.

The game has the general feeling of being more about football than actually being a football game with all the intricacies of the sport. So, let's just call it a football-adjacent game, rather than the actual game.

From an investor point of view, the game has the potential to be addictive and the fact that it works on mobile means there's huge potential. There is still a lot to come in the future and I certainly hope there will be improvements that make the game more fun and navigating the platform easier.

Thanks for this very honest review. Makes me a bit less excited about the potential of Genesis Soccer but maybe they get things improved. So far Splinterlands is that state of the art when it comes to blockchain trading card games in my view.

Non football fans will enjoy the game though. It still has the potential of being addictive and as an investor, that's all I wanna hear. However, as a gamer and football fan, I don't think I'll be playing it.

Well, my idea was that it could get really big IF they get football fans onboard. What you wrote, that seems rather unlikely so for me that’s not soo good news. 😏🤷🏼‍♂️

Oh yeah, from that perspective, it is very unlikely. However, it does seem like their target market is Americans and you know, they're not big on "soccer" over there so for most of them, it'll just be another game.

Speaking of football, have you joined the Hive Fantasy Football community?

No. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Am not a big gamer in the end.

I can't disagree with you or butterfly. I even can't be that polite. However, there is a silver line. The mobile version, as priority. And you know how many people all around the world are 100% mobile phone addicted. Average people, and they are touching that crap in every 2 minutes, play all kind of silly games, all the time.

Well, it still can be one of those games, and if you mix the football fans&mobile addicted people, you still get a nice number as target audiance. That's another question how many of them willing to spend money for this game. I don't know how big deal to add it to one of the stores, that could give a huge boost, and picking up few thousands people very fast after full launch, still not an impossible outcome. (Next to newcomers through the MLSPA connection.) The further part would be easier.

The game and gameplay itself... I won't repeat my opinion. Probably, as they planned GLS for more sport games, they would had to start with another team sport, not the most popular one. One which has 7 or less players. Handball for example, or waterpolo, that's kinda known in US, too.

Personally, I still think, they should change the theme to some fun direction, don't pretend its a real, playable football or football manager game. Something like beach soccer, foosball, coin football, button football, something unique, what explains basic things like 7 players, lower 2d design, partly even gameplay. If it would be introduced in a different way, it wouldn't get booed that much. People would straightaway except they will get something else, not this far from the usual football games and football itself.

And actually, nobody really mention the play 2 earn aspect, what most of the other football games don't have. That's a factor, too.

Anyway, hopefully we are all wrong!
