My Dad's 80th Birthday

( EN / DE ) A long weekend lies behind me and somehow it feels like I participated in a cake and pie baking marathon. For three days we celebrated this special occasion.

The original plan was to have coffee and cake in a small circle on Friday, followed by a big barbecue with family and friends on Saturday. But as so often in life, things turned out differently than expected.
Our wood supplier got in touch. Normally we get 3 tons of wood from him every year in autumn. This year he is as good as sold out and we had to promise spontaneously to Friday to get the firewood for the winter. (but that will probably also be a separate post I think)

So now the birthday cake had to be baked quickly on Thursday evening and then the firewood cost us most of Friday. When we were thinking of going through our coffee and cake as planned, suddenly all the neighbors trickled in one by one to spontaneously congratulate and already the beer flowed in streams and cake was no longer to think of.

After bad weather and a lot of rain was announced for Saturday, we decided to postpone the barbecue to Sunday and the coffee and cake to Saturday. Yea, thats my dear chaos family!

Today finally we had the celebration and it was really really nice. We were 28 people and the weather was wonderful with bright sunshine. Since we all and also my dad are huge Greece fans and were already in the 1970s there on vacations (when there were no mega hotels on the beaches) was of course a gyros grilled for this special occasion, plus there was Greek salad and tsatziki. Very very tasty.

Then of course some cake again and in the end everyone was full and happy.

80 Years! That is already such a number, which gives a lot to think about. When my father was born there was still the 2nd World War. Afterwards the reconstruction. When he was 10 years old, my grandfather built this house here, where we all still live today, and he was 26 years old when I was born ;-) At that time he seemed sooo old to me!
TV, telephone, jeans, short skirts, are now just a few examples of what has changed within these 80 years. In his youth he still heard music from those big tape reels. There was rock n roll dancing and people like James Dean and Elvis were changing the world.

I'm very happy that my parents are still so fit and I really hope it stays that way for a long time. Sometimes I have the feeling that they are fitter than I am?
Just recently I had a conversation about how the older generations still approach this thing called "life" completely differently. That they were able to learn a lot more resilience in the post-war era, or that by growing up in much more convention-driven times, they simply appreciate some freedoms and conveniences a lot more, or just differently. I don't know either, what do you think about that?

In any case, it was three great days during which the now 4 great-grandchildren also had a lot of fun.

Der 80. Geburtstag meines Dads

Ein langes Wochenende liegt hinter mir und irgendwie fühlt es sich so an, als hätte ich an einem Torten und Kuchen Back Marathon mitgewirkt. Drei Tage lang haben wir diesen besonderen Anlass gefeiert.

Der ursprüngliche Plan war, am Freitag im kleinen Kreise Kaffee und Kuchen, darauf am Samstag ein großes Grillfest mit Familie und Freunden. Doch wie so oft im Leben kam es anders als gedacht.
Unser Holzlieferant meldete sich. Normalerweise bekommen wir von ihm jedes Jahr im Herbst 3 Tonnen Holz. Dieses Jahr ist er so gut wie ausverkauft und wir mussten spontan zum Freitag zusagen um das Brennholz für den Winter zu bekommen. (aber das wird wohl auch noch ein eigener Post werden denke ich)

Die Geburtstagstorte musste nun also noch schnell am Donnerstag Abend gebacken werden und das Brennholz hat uns dann einen Großteil des Freitags gekostet. Als wir daran dachten, wie geplant unseren Kaffee und Kuchen durchzuziehen, trudelten plötzlich nach und nach alle Nachbarn ein, um spontan zu gratulieren und schon floss das Bier in Strömen und an Torte war nicht mehr zu denken.

Nachdem für Samstag schlechtes Wetter und viel Regen angesagt wurde, beschlossen wir also, das Grillfest auf den Sonntag zu verschieben und die Kaffee und Kuchen auf den Samstag. Ja, die liebe Chaos Familie!

Heute war dann dieses Fest und es war wirklich richtig schön gelungen. Wir waren 28 Leute und das Wetter war wunderbar mit strahlendem Sonnenschein. Da wir alle und auch mein Dad riesige Griechenland Fans sind und auch schon in den 1970er Jahren dort auf Urlaub waren (als es noch keine Mega Hotels an den Stränden gab) wurde zu diesem besonderen Anlass natürlich ein Gyros gegrillt, dazu gab es griechischen Salat und Tsatziki. Sehr sehr lecker.

Dann gabs natürlich wieder Torte und Kuchen und am Ende waren alle satt und glücklich.

80 Jahre. Das ist schon so eine Zahl, wo man sich viele Gedanken macht. Als mein Vater geboren wurde herrschte noch der 2. Weltkrieg. Danach der Wiederaufbau. Als er 10 Jahre alt war baute mein Großvater dieses Haus hier, in dem wir auch heute noch alle leben und er war 26 Jahre als, als ich geboren wurde ;-) dabei kam er mir damals sooo alt vor!
Fernseher, Telefon, Jeans, kurze Röcke, sind jetzt nur ein paar Beispiele was sich alles verändert hat innerhalb dieser 80 Jahre. In seiner Jugend hörte er noch Musik von diesen großen Tonbandrollen. Es wurde Rock n Roll getanzt und Menschen wie James Dean und Elvis veränderten die Welt.

Ich bin sehr froh, dass meine Eltern noch so fit sind und ich hoffe sehr, dass das noch lange so bleibt. Manchmal habe ich das Gefühl, sie sind fitter als ich es bin?
Erst kürzlich hatte ich ein Gespräch, in dem es darum ging, dass die älteren Generationen noch völlig anders an diese Sache genannt „Leben“ herangehen. Dass sie in der Nachkriegszeit viel mehr Resilienz erlernen konnten oder dass dadurch, dass sie in viel mehr von Konventionen geprägten Zeiten aufgewachsen sind, manche Freiheiten und Annehmlichkeiten einfach viel mehr oder einfach anders zu schätzen wissen. Ich weiß auch nicht, was denkt ihr darüber?

Jedenfalls waren es drei tolle Tage bei denen auch die mittlerweile 4 Urenkeln viel Spaß hatten.
