Remembering Pepper
A Walk Down Memory Lane While Preparing for Christmas
As the holiday season approached, my wife and I found ourselves immersed in the bittersweet task of decorating our home for Christmas. This year, however, was different. Our hearts were heavy with the absence of our beloved furry friends, Molly and Pepper, who had been cherished parts of our lives for over 14 years (Pepper) and 15 years (Molly).
"Don't you touch my toys."
The journey down memory lane began as we decided to sift through a basket of dog toys accumulated over the past 18 years. With two dogs in the house, the collection was not only vast but also filled with sentimental value. Some toys were purchased with love, while others were thoughtful gifts from friends and family. It was a task that needed to be done, yet we knew it wouldn't be easy.
The memories associated with each toy came rushing back, flooding our minds with moments of joy, laughter, and companionship. The process of deciding which toys to keep and which to let go proved to be emotionally challenging. My wife, it seemed, handled the task with more ease than I did. She moved through the process, letting go of items with a sense of resolution that I struggled to find.
Pepper with some of his FAVORITE toys
As we sorted through the toys, we couldn't help but recall the special ones—those that Molly and Pepper, always carried around. We affectionately referred to these toys as their "babies." They accompanied our dogs everywhere, from playtime at home to bedtime snuggles and even on our family trips.
The process was not without its challenges. There were moments when I found myself retrieving a few toys from the discard pile, unable to part with certain cherished memories. But as we adorned our home with festive decorations, Pepper's spirit lingered in the air, and the love we felt for him continued to warm our hearts.
In the end, the basket of toys served as a tangible testament to the rich tapestry of our life with Pepper. He may no longer be physically present, but his memory lives on in the laughter, the love, and the paw prints he left on our hearts. Damn, do we miss that little guy.
Then A Surprise ..
Just a few days ago, I stumbled upon an old zip drive tucked away in my desk. Curiosity led me to explore its contents, and to my delight, I discovered precious puppy photos of Pepper from when he was just a few months old. In those images, I saw glimpses of the very toys we were deliberating over – a serendipitous connection between past and present.
I'll share a select few with you...
Mr Snowman got tossed out. It never really became one of the favorites.. just a dust collector at some point down the road.
He loved his pig ears, until he started throwing them up that is. Then no more pig ears. sorry Pepper.
Protecting Mommy while she slept. I edited out mommy. she would have killed me if I put her sleepy self in the photo and shared for the world. lol
I wonder what ever happened to this mouse. It was a favorite for a long while. He probably wore it out.
Puppies are so cute when they sleep. Pepper was no different. He would play like a rock star and then crash. Then as soon as he go up he was recharged and ready for more.
He never thought a toy was too big for him.
Most likely the stare for me to put the camera down and get on the floor so he could bite my fingers some more. Puppy teeth are SO SHARP!
L O V E LOVE LOVE this shot. A Pepper and me selfie :)
And his moo-moo. This one hurt to throw away.. but we did. It was in very bad shape.
Pepper's puppyhood captured in those photos was a reminder of the joy he brought into our lives. The images portrayed a little guy, full of life and mischief, with a heartwarming cuteness that melted our hearts. As we reminisced about those early days, the decision about which toys to keep became clearer.
The ones that held a piece of Pepper's history ..
Those were the keepers.
I put these two side by side. Pepper at lets say two months, and then at 12 years. Some things never change. His curiosity and attention to details never stopped amazing me.
amazing connection some pets have with us
Yes it is truly undeniable 😌
❤️❤️❤️
Ahh man. I can see my future in your post. I am so sorry both your babies have passed on now. 💔
Pepper was such a handsome little man.
He really was a cute little fella.. that grew into one of the best dogs we ever had. Hard to think they are both gone now. I hope the future you speak of does not come too soon. Enjoy every day!
In the same way, when one remembers the time spent with each other, a person is definitely worried, but this is life, it has to go on like this, it is better that a person should live life with laughter and happiness.
yes. It is best to live every day to the fullest.. like it is ones last day.
Yeah you are right.

Thank you! I appreciate the support. 😁
Awe @bdmillergallery, they were absolutely adorable, I can just imagine how awful it must be without them, especially at special times like this. Pepper looks too cute sleeping like that! Great that you found the old photos though!
It was a really nice surprise to find them. A little bitter sweet, but that's life. We have been fine for the most part, it's when we are not busy or get caught off guard doing something that we would have done with them, that it hurts the most.
Look at that pile of toys! I thought my cat was spoiled… LOL loved the look back on the Pepper years. :))
He was so stinkin cute. Miss that little guy every single day.
I can see he had a lot of fun :) Why not use the toys as decorations, either year round or on holidays? Especially doggie birthdays?
