Poetic Homage to a 1921 Silver Dollar

IMG_1822.jpeg

I wrote this poem as a homage to a 1921 Silver Dollar .. A seemingly ordinary object that carries within it the echoes of a bygone era. After the last post I wrote about parting ways with some items I have collected over the years, I began to think about the memories objects hold, like little secrets. As I was reinvesting the returns of selling those items into more coins, I thought to myself that those coins have untold stories of their own. I will always wonder about those never to be revealed, silent secrets.

In The Pocket's Dark Embrace

A Poem By B D Miller

In the pocket's dark embrace, a relic rests,
A silver whisper from the vaults of time,
1921, a numismatic ghost,
Its face adorned with Lady Liberty's prime.

A coin, a mirror to a bygone age,
Where flappers danced in jazz's wild refrain,
Prohibition's shroud, a silent cage,
Yet silver dollars clinked in speakeasy's domain.

This piece of metal, witness to the roar,
Of Model T's and flivvers on the street,
In the moonlit nights of the Gatsby lore,
It jingled in the pockets of those discreet.

A dollar's worth in weight, but so much more,
In stories etched upon its silent face,
A nation healing from the world at war,
Yet dreams of prosperity find a place.

The eagle soars, its wingspan vast,
Above the fields of wheat, the amber waves,
Yet, in the coin's cool touch, memories cast,
Of Roaring Twenties, in dim-lit caves.

Oh, 1921 Silver Dollar, bearer of tales,
Of bootlegged spirits and Charleston's swing,
A silent witness as time sets sails,
Through decades, as the pendulum swings.

In the palm of a hand, a portal to past,
A connection forged with history's thread,
A numismatic relic, unsurpassed,
In the lore of days gone by, it's said.

So, let it gleam, this silver coin,
A token from an era's hidden strife,
In secrets kept, its echoes join,
A poem spun from the loom of life.

The coin, nestled in the pocket's embrace.. Serves as a silent witness to the events and atmosphere of the Roaring Twenties. I was inspired by the idea that this small piece of metal could hold stories of flappers dancing in jazz-filled nights, the prohibition era's clandestine activities, and the overall spirit of a nation healing from the aftermath of World War I. The coin becomes a mirror reflecting the past, with Lady Liberty's face embodying the ideals and struggles of that time. Through this poem, I aimed to capture the essence of history embedded in such an everyday item, weaving a narrative that connects the present with the rich tapestry of the past.

Below are a few photos of one of my 1921 Silver Peace Dollars (My favorite year for this coin). I took the shots amongst a few tobacco pipes that I will soon sell and leverage those sales dollars into more coins. I have about a dozen or so pipes. Hopefully I can pick up a couple of coins after their sale.

A few scratches, a little dirt, but overall beautiful detail and nice strike.. In my opinion at least.

Those were the days of unprecedented growth and prosperity, with ingenuity and self-reliance a person can go from bust to riches in short order.
Not financial advice.
Not endorsing smoking as healthy past time either.

Hahahaha.. smoking was the bomb then. Now if you smoke all your riches go towards the cigarette companies. Thank goodness for me I never picked that habit up.

Those pipes are pretty cool too. I used to have an old wooden one, but I got rid of it a long time ago. I was never able to get the hang of packing it right. My buddy has one that he smokes every now and then. I used to have a great uncle that would smoke pipe tobacco and I've always found something comforting in the smell.

The smell is awesome for sure. I know what you're talking about. I picked all these up and a walnut carousel with humidor, from a thrift store a while back. Figured I would eventually sell them, but haven't in probably five years. Lol - time to go. I'm not going to smoke with them, so may as well part ways.

Yeah, that probably makes sense. They are still really cool!
