Orchid Update! Cattleya and The Others

avatar
(Edited)

Cattleya, Dendrobium, Phalaenopsis ..

They all seem to be up to one thing or another .. Especially that Cattleya orchid of ours that is nearing bloom. But I can not forget the Phalaenopsis that has been pushing out a new flower spike. The spike on that Phal has been maturing quite rapidly since I last reported on it. I noticed a new cane shoot forming on one of our Dendrobiums, and our Vanda orchid.. Well she is happy just hanging around watching everyone else.

Let's Start With The Cattleya Orchid ..

IMG_1876.JPG

Even after only a weeks time .. The Cattleya's bloom stem has put on some impressive growth. I am going to compile some photos and make a progressive compilation (see bellow) so you can see how it has progressed. The first shot was roughly 20 days ago and the last I shot this morning.

I think it is safe to say that this girl is on the move! How long until it decides to open and bloom? Hopefully soon.. the suspense is killing me.

Phalaenopsis Is Up Next ..

IMG_1875.JPG

This Is Pepper's Sympathy Orchid .. Given to us after Pepper's passing several years ago. Hard to believe it has been 'Several Years' since he has left us, but it has. This Phal Orchid is getting close to opening the first, of many, developing flower buds. I counted 8 so far and they should be white unless I am foolishly mistaken. She seems to be liking her new watering schedule (which is due today) - Roots, leaves and over all plant heath appear to be fantastic.

Our other Phals are not in bloom .. But they are putting on new growth and building their root systems. In the shot below you'll see a few examples of new leaves. They all seem to be liking the new watering technique we have been using on them.

There are two small Phalaenopsis orchids that are in bloom .. They are new additions to our Orchid family. I never did end up writing much about them. My wife picked them out while on a shopping trip, and thought they would help pick up our spirits after Molly's passing. They did just that. They are both at the end of their recent bloom cycle. The plants are looking very healthy and almost require a repotting. I was trying to wait until they were done blooming.

The flowers are very pretty!

The Dendrobiums ..

1_1706975456717.png

The Dendrobium Orchids are looking good .. Although neither had bloomed since we brought them home. That's okay, we will be patient and take care of them the best we can until they think the time is right. The one on the left is starting to out grow the pot it's in. I may have to find another terracotta pot that has a bit of weight to it. This Orchid falls over a lot because it is very top heavy. She needs a new pot stat! If you look closely at the base, a couple of new cane spikes are present. I have not noticed them growing very fast though.

IMG_1878.JPG

The second of the Dendrobiums is also looking good .. She also has a new cane spike pushing up from the base. This particular Dendrobium has a fast growth rate, as far as the new canes go. It seems like we notice the new growth spike and then in a week or two it's 3 or 4 inches long. It's sort of looks thin and messy, but that's just how these particular Dendrobium orchids look.

Last But Not Least - The Vanda Orchid ..

IMG_1807.JPG

Our one and only Vanda Orchid is just hanging out .. She's happy to just watch everything going on around here rather than to contribute anything. hehe. There was a new leave a while back and if she's growing new leaves, then I am happy with that. Just trying not to kill this one is my goal. We soak the roots at least once per week and that seems to be working out so far. It looks like I may have to cut that yellowing leaf off soon, but other than that not much to report on this one.

That's All Folks ..

A longer post than I set out to write about our Orchids, but I guess I had more to say than I originally thought. Hopefully we see some new flowers soon. Like always, I will keep you up to date on any new developments in that department.

Have A Beautiful Weekend!

Her Tiny Collar

By BDMiller

The moon weeps softly, shedding silver tears,
As memories linger, drowning in fears,
Tiny collar jingles in the quiet air,
A requiem for a companion beyond compare.

“Maybe it’s not about having a beautiful day, but about finding beautiful moments. Maybe a whole day is just too much to ask. I could choose to believe that in every day, in all things, no matter how dark and ugly, there are shards of beauty if I look for them.”

Happy weekend to you as well!
It's progressing fast. Hopefully in another post I will have a flower to share. Bright red!

Who knew there were so many different varieties! I sure didn't! It looks like they are all coming along really well! It really inspires me to want to try to grow some myself, but I know I would probably just be throwing the money away! :P

I know my limitations as well. I never like to throw money away (seems like something I do every time I clean out my freezer 😣) so I get it. Those artificial orchids are just as nice.
I know you remember when I almost killed them all trying something new.. so yeah, they are looking awesome since that event. They have come a long way.

For sure. Funny thing is I got that idea from from someone who uses that with their orchids. Works OK for them. Just didn't for me. Who knows. Learned my lesson. Lol.

Wow, that's crazy. So the orchids must just need the water to keep going huh? They don't need soil or nutrients like some other plants do?

Most of the time they can get what they need from tap water. I use a MiracleGrow fert that dissolves in water, made for orchids. I just add a little once per month. If one has well water then fertilizer is almost 100% needed. So yes, the roots are a little different then that of regular plants. In the wild they grow on trees and rocks where there is no soil.. so it sort of makes sense when you consider that.

Ah, okay, I think I know what you are saying. We had some ivy that was growing up our old tree in the bark. Our tap water is city water from lake Huron, but it has a bunch of minerals in it. Calcium mostly I think.

Loved seeing the compilation of growth. That’s so cool! And that last one of Molly and orchids is just lovely.

Hahaha.. I had to throw that photo of her in. She was not as curious as Pepper, but she still kept her eye on me wondering if I would venture more towards the door or refrigerator for food.

It's good that you put a lot of effort into making these plants look beautiful and they also have a lot of work to do, they have to be watered on time then they grow well and they all look very beautiful too.

They are just so beautiful and you have quite a collection of so many orchids but I was so enamoured by the 'yellow fan with purple dots' orchid and your very cute dog.

Thank you!
Molly, our dog, passed away a few months ago. We are still getting through the loss.
The flowers helped tremendously.

Oh.. I am so sorry for your loss and I'm happy to know that the nurturing of these flowers is filling some void.
