Cyclonic Storm Fengal affecting places near Chennai

This is usually the time of the year when I have some Cyclone or heavy rainfall. I don't know who comes up with names for these cyclones but this time the name is Fengal. It originates in the Bay of Bengal and moves towards the shores of India, affecting the coastal regions. Chennai is a city where the Cyclones usually have an effect and it is also a vulnerable city that cannot stand heavy rains.

We have poor water management in the city and due to a lot of exploitation and encroachment, the actual water bodies find their spots only when the rain happens. People have built houses in and around the lakes, which becomes a problem when heavy rains happen. The water finds its natural routes during these times which is what creates the problem. We cannot tell the water not to come because people have built houses there. Water usually does not care about it and they go wherever they want.

The above image is from the website https://earth.nullschool.net. I like to view this data from this website directly because it gives a nice representation of the storm. It also gives a real value and movement of the storm. We cannot completely rely on the news channels because they sometimes tell the truth and sometimes they don't tell anything much. But seeing this directly by ourselves gives a better understanding for me.

A few weeks back we had a similar one and for that again red alert was announced and we had water logging problems and heavy rains. After that monsoon, this one looked like a manageable one because this time the government had given only an orange alert, and the rains were not very heavy. We are having heavy winds and that too is not very consistent but it is happening.

As we usually fear this time again there were no heavy rains and no possibility of floods. That way we are safe. There are places in Chennai that cannot stand even a single day of rain and it gets flooded but we cannot consider that as regular floods. Only after things are back to normal in a couple of days, we will know what damage happened. I'm sure there would have been issues with trees and tree branches falling interrupting the regular commutes. Otherwise, the impact should not be very big. We have to wait and see.

Ultimately, consistent government action and community awareness are essential in improving Chennai's resilience against such weather events.

Continued dialogue about environmental preservation, urban planning, and disaster preparedness can pave the way for a more secure future for the city's inhabitants.
