Hello everyone

Last July 20-21 marked a significant period for Buddhists as they observed Asahna Bucha Day and the beginning of Buddhist Lent. Asarnha Bucha Day commemorates the Lord Buddha's first sermon, a pivotal event in Buddhist history. The following day, Buddhist Lent. During this time, Buddhist monks dwell permanently for three months, coinciding with the rainy season. This period is dedicated to deepening their Dhamma practice, studying the Dhamma and Vinaya, and preparing to teach and ordain new monks at the end of the Lent.

Buddhist Lent is also a time when laypeople participate actively in religious activities. One of the most significant traditions is offering Buddhist Lent candles to temples. These candles symbolize the light of wisdom and are used by monks during their meditative and devotional practices.

During this time, many Buddhists bring Buddhist Lent candles to offer at the temple. Once the consecration ceremony is completed, the candles are placed at designated locations around the temple grounds and lit at dusk. The sight of numerous candles illuminating the temple at dusk creates a beautiful and unusual picture. This may be the first temple where so many Buddhist Lent candles are placed and lit throughout the grounds, creating a breathtaking scene.

Recently, Wat Phithak Samanakit has gained fame on social media, particularly on TikTok. This temple has captured the hearts of many due to its unique practice of using only candlelight, shunning electricity. This tradition not only honors ancient customs but also creates a serene and mystical atmosphere that draws visitors and devotees alike.

The temple does not have enough resources to pay for electricity because it is a small temple focusing on Vipassana meditation. As a result, there are no tourists who come to visit and donate funds for water and electricity bills. To address this, the temple has chosen not to use electricity at all, relying instead on candlelight. However, this year, the lighting of many Buddhist Lent candles within the temple grounds has gone viral. Many people now flock to visit the temple and offer candles in large numbers, attracted by the unique and serene atmosphere created by the candlelight.

As the monks of Wat Phithak Samanakit immerse themselves in their practices, the temple's candlelit serenity becomes a beacon of devotion and tranquility. The shared experience of offering candles fosters a sense of community among the devotees, united in their respect for the Buddha's teachings and their support for the monastic community.

This period of Buddhist Lent is not only a time for introspection and spiritual growth for the monks but also a reminder of the enduring traditions that continue to inspire and unite Buddhists around the world. The fame of Wat Phithak Samanakit, fueled by the modern reach of social media, exemplifies how ancient practices can find new life and relevance in contemporary society, illuminating the path of Dhamma for future generations.

Wat Phithak Samanakit, a small but significant temple, is nestled in the Talat Yai Subdistrict of the Mueang Phuket District in Phuket Province. Although situated in Phuket City, the temple's environment is a stark contrast to the urban hustle and bustle. The temple grounds are shaded by large trees, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere. During the rainy season, the abundant rain transforms the ground into a lush carpet of green moss, adding to the area's natural beauty.
