Sacred Solace - A Visit to Thepwanaram Temple
Hello everyone
After weeks of non-stop rain, today was a welcome change. The sun finally broke through the clouds, painting the sky in brilliant hues of blue. It was a sight I hadn't seen in what felt like forever. The perfect weather for some photography, a hobby I'd taken up since I started blogging. I preferred the sunlight over the constant rain any day.
This morning, I decided to visit Thepwanaram Temple, an ancient place of worship with a rich history. It was built back in 1977, but the land it stood on had a much older story. It used to be a cemetery, where Thai and Chinese people were laid to rest. Surprisingly, the land originally belonged to a man named Mr. Nui Na Thalang. Before he passed away, he left a letter gifting this land to the temple. It was a gesture of incredible kindness and faith, showing the deep connection between people and the places they hold dear.
The temple's entrance was a cool oasis, sheltered by a diverse array of trees. Their branches intertwined, creating a natural canopy that provided respite from the sun's rays. The dappled sunlight played on the ground, casting a mosaic of shifting patterns. It was a serene welcome, inviting visitors to step into the sacred realm beyond.
Stepping further into the temple, I came face to face with a towering figure, crafted to resemble a jinn. It was a remarkable creation, fashioned from materials readily available in the local vicinity. Intrigued, I inquired about its significance.
As I learned, this creation was part of a tradition observed on the tenth lunar month. According to belief, it was a day designated for making merit, particularly for parents, grandparents, and departed relatives, especially those who were believed to be destined for the realm of the departed or commonly referred to as ghosts. On this auspicious day, they were granted a special opportunity to reunite with their living relatives in what was metaphorically termed the "Human City." It was a touching testament to the enduring connections we hold with our departed loved ones.
Inside the temple, a profound quiet enveloped the space, broken only by the gentle murmur of a water fountain. Intrigued, I followed the melodic sound until I reached its source.
There is a koi pond, its surface shimmering with graceful fish gliding beneath. The vibrant colors of the koi added a lively contrast to the serene surroundings. However, as I aimed my camera to capture the moment, the water's murkiness created a hazy filter, obscuring the clarity of the scene. Despite the challenge, there was a certain mystique to the image, hinting at the hidden beauty beneath the surface.
Despite the scorching heat, the temple's comforting shade provided a welcome reprieve. Tall trees formed a natural canopy, offering a cool haven from the relentless sun. Taking refuge under one such expansive tree, I felt an instant relief from the sweltering weather. I idly glanced upwards, and to my surprise, a sleek black cat met my gaze. Unable to resist, I softly called out with a gentle "meow." The cat turned its head, eyes glinting with curiosity. However, it seemed content to remain perched in its leafy sanctuary, unmoved by my friendly invitation. There it stayed, a silent observer, blending seamlessly with the dappling shadows of the ancient tree.
Within the temple's serene confines, a colossal Buddha statue sat in deep contemplation, nestled beneath the comforting embrace of a sprawling tree. Its presence commanded a profound sense of tranquility and reverence.
This magnificent Buddha sculpture was a testament to the unwavering faith of the local villagers. Crafted with devotion and meticulous care, it stood as a symbol of their collective spiritual devotion.
Adjacent to the imposing Buddha statue, a small pavilion graced the temple grounds. It was adorned with intricate decorations, showcasing a testament to the reverence held for this sacred space.
Stepping inside, I was met with a solemn sight - a coffin, draped in ceremonial fabric, rested at the center. Within it lay the uncorrupted body of Luang Phor Phan, preserved over time, a remarkable manifestation of spiritual grace.
Having paid my respects to Luang Phor Pan, I made my way towards the adjacent chapel. The heat was becoming more intense, but the temple's image was striking against the backdrop of the clear sky.
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many temples had been forced to close their chapel doors, barring people from entering, except for significant ceremonies. It was a source of sadness, knowing that the inner sanctuaries were off-limits. I couldn't help but wonder about the hidden beauty within those sacred walls.
After some time, as the heat continued to rise, I decided to start my journey back home. The memory of the temple's exterior beauty lingered in my mind, a reminder of the profound tranquility that resided within its walls.

That temple is so colourful! I don't think I have seen a temple that colourful and bright. It looks like such a tranquil place to visit as well.
It truly is! The vibrant colors make it a unique and serene place to explore.

I need to understand something about Buddha
Why is it that there are so many types of Buddha in different places?
Buddhism has various traditions and cultural interpretations, which has led to different representations of Buddha across regions. Each form of Buddha may hold specific significance within its respective tradition or belief system.
