A Visit to St. Mary's Anglican Church, one of the oldest churches in the land of Obosi
Today I went on a visit to St. Mary's Anglican Church, located in Ugamuma, Obosi, Nigeria. The church is one of the town's oldest churches. The church seems to be in the center where four different roads leading to different locations are joined to each other. The origin of the church dates back to the late 19th century. The construction of the church was initiated In 1894 by Reverend Bennett and the Church Committee of St. Andrew's Anglican church Obosi. Its walls were formerly made with bamboo sticks. From my observations this church building is the biggest in the area it is located because I noticed there are smaller buildings used as churches for other denominations.
Immediately after entering the church compound the first thing to notice is the beautiful flowers, carpet grasses and some ornamental trees which are perfectly lined up towards the walkway to the church building in beautiful patterns.
Amazingly they all maintained their greenish nature as though well watered even though the area is experiencing harsh harmattan. The church compound is very big and fenced with high walls. Most part of the church ground was interlocked except for the section of the compound where the heavy machinery was parked.
The church compound also serves as home to different tricycles who may be members of the church but I believe it must be kept for safety.
At the time of my visit, the church clearly wasn't having any programs, yet I saw some people in other buildings within the compound but the main church building was locked. The church also seems to have a kitchen and cook where the hungry can go and eat.
I especially love the fact that the road to the church is very smooth, in fact the town itself has a network of good roads. The only thing that would have been a serious threat to St Mary's Anglican Church In this region is Erosion. Just not too far from where the church fence ended, there is a big gully Erosion which is deep and can swallow a two storey building completely without being noticed. The good thing is that at the time of my visit, construction workers are already there working on the site. The church has a place set up for the public to fetch water and two giant tanks hung up on a well established platform. I also noticed the presence of heavy machineries within the church compound, some heavy tippers with a bulldozer and another caterpillar product used in road construction.
It was said that the church was renovated which helped enhance its looks because I was surprised how such a block structure would be existing from the olden days and yet appear solid and somehow up to date. The construction of the current church building started in March 1981. It's quite a lovely place. The air in the region is quite refreshing and there's a small market across the road just by the left side of the church where anybody can buy foodstuffs ranging from growing farm products like vegetables, yam, fresh water melons, cucumbers etc. There's also provision for those interested in beverages to buy their desired products.
The church location is good and accessible by the road and I love it. I especially love the fact that the atmosphere is different and I enjoyed my journey to the location because I love traveling.
Thank you.
This place looks very beautiful.
Thanks dear, it really is but I'm specially amazed how lomg the building has existed.
