The lesson my first salary taught me

The first salary is always special for everyone. The thought of being paid after you work or the first profit you make from your new business is always exciting. The thought of making a list of what to do with the first salary or how to spend it, is something everyone always has in mind.

My first salary came when i decided to find something doing instead of sitting at home waiting for the day i will be offered admission into tertiary institution.

So i got a sales-boy job with the pay of five thousand Naira. I was less excited about the job cause i was hoping to get something better but at least it saved me from being idle at home.
Five thousand Naira was really valuable in Nigeria as at then compared to now. I mean during that year, when you tell anyone that a boy of my age is earning five thousand Naira monthly, they will definitely be like, "that’s really a cool cash for a young boy like you."

So the first day at work, i started thinking of how i will spend my first salary and also save little from it same for other months to come.

After a month i got my first salary, i was super excited and proud of myself because there was no error in my sales throughout the month which might have resulted to not getting my full salary or no salary.
When i received the salary, the first thing i did was to take one thousand Naira out of it to buy data after which i lavished the remaining four thousand Naira within two days forgetting all the things i promised to buy and how i will save little from it.

I stayed broke for the second month as i couldn't ask my parents for any penny to avoid accounting for how i spent my first salary.
Second salary came in and i make sure i did something tangible with the money.

If there is one thing i learnt from my first salary, it would be to always make sure i budget for what i want to use money for or make a list to avoid spending unwisely.

In conclusion, since then, i have cultivated the habit of not spending out of budget and always make sure i save little in case an emergency arise.

That moment when you had to stay broke and quiet about it .. loool.
It is good to have a rigid spending plan too. To save, spend, invest.
Thankfully that's in the past. Lol

Which year was that? Because I earned 3500 back in 2010, as little as it was then, we were happy making it.
