Let Go: Avril Lavigne Changing the Landscape in Female Music Scene

Back in early 2000s, most female artists are doing almost the same thing as Britney Spears doing, with dance pop music and choreography. However, things changed in female music scene in 2002 through the arrival of Avril Lavigne. For sure, female pop rock acts such as Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton came out first but Avril has more charisma, attitude, and style. Her first album "Let Go" became iconic that many other female artists took the pop-rock music route.

"Let Go" was preceded by the single "Complicated" which became one of the most successful singles of 2002 despite not reaching number 1 in some official charts. It reached number 3 in UK Singles Chart, while it peaked at number 2 of Europe Hot 100. In Billboard Hot 100, it also reached number 2 while it was a chart-topper in Mainstream chart.

Her second single "Sk8er Boi" was also an iconic song with its music video and theme. It reached number 8 in the UK and 10 in Billboard Hot 100. It became her second number 1 hit in Mainstream chart though.

Avril Lavigne toned down on her third single "I'm with You", a pop rock ballad which became her third top 10 in Billboard Hot 100 going to number 4. It peaked at number 7 in UK, also her third top 10 in the country. In Mainstream chart, it became her third consecutive number 1 hit. "Losing Grip" was the fourth single but it was a moderate hit reaching number 22 in UK, and 64 in Billboard Hot 100. "Mobile" was released in Australia and New Zealand, while "Nobody's Fool" was released during the height of her second album "Under My Skin". Both latter songs didn't make an impact though.
