Helpless nation
Clicked my me.
Is existing easy? I would say, perhaps not. Average starting salary for university graduates can be as low as BDT 15-20k in Bangladesh. I’m not considering the fancy high paying bank jobs or the multinational FMCGs, I’m talking about local companies/organizations (who are the largest employers of our fresh graduate pool) that have had a really poor salary structure for a while now and continue to exploit the excess supply in the labor market by offering unreasonably low salaries. The practice is so prevalent that if you think these graduates are mostly from tier 2 or 3 universities then you’d be grossly mistaken. I’ve seen top conglomerates pay BUET engineers just 25k a month as starting salaries!
If we put this widely practiced exploitative salary structure into play in this inflationary market conditions then this paints a pretty grim picture.
Let’s consider an individual (with a 20k salary) who lives in a shared apartment with parents living in a different city or even village. How would his/her monthly budget look in this inflationary environment:
▪️Rent per month in the shared apartment (“mess” as you call it in Bangladesh): 8,500-9,000tk (including utilities and internet)
▪️Monthly food expense: Breakfast 70tk + Lunch 120 + Dinner 100 = 290tk x 30 days = 8,700tk (increased food prices taken into account)
▪️Transportation cost: 40tk round trip would be 46tk now with 16% increase in local bus fares. Total monthly cost = 46 x 30 = 1,380tk
▪️Let’s say the individual has to send some money back home (as is often the case) to his parents to contribute towards his family expenses: 3,000tk/month
▪️Miscellaneous expenses (i.e. mobile): 1,000-2,000tk
🔺Total expenses: 23k+ (took only bare minimum cost into calculation)
So in a nutshell with a monthly salary of 20k, a fresher who has just entered the job market will not be able to survive this market unless his salary is adequately adjusted with inflation/current market conditions - a highly unlikely scenario.
When lower middle income/middle income families of 4 are struggling with a monthly salary of 50-60k, fresh graduates who are on their own and who also have to support their families basically stand no chance.
Spare some thought for these freshers, the psychological trauma they’re going through day in, day out is just unimaginable.
Their pain is not seen but trust me, you’d feel it if you just talk to them!
No one should have to deal with such situation at such a tender age and that too at the very beginning of his/her career.
