A Father: Lifeline and Protector

I don't have a perfect family nor the regular family who lives simple, cares for each other's needs, tries their best to provide an emotional or financial support, have imperfections but still trying to understand the members in the family. All I have is a family which isn't expressive like me and that vices are their priority over food. A hardworking mother and a father that loves his vices so much; it ruined him.

We don't have better father figure from him but we received from our Uncle and Grandfather; now deceased, but they're memories are still guiding us wherever we go.

My Uncle is the only sibling my mother had, and we're calling him "Daddy" ever since we were kids. He was our lifeline everytime we were starving at home. We'll go to his house and he will then get us what we wanted; spoiling us with foods, fruits, and watch hours with their television before our mother comes home. It was unfortunate that he couldn't bear a son of his own, but he adopted one. Then, that's how we witness and learned how to love a person like your family, blood-related or not. He treats everyone nicely like they are our relatives. That's why his house was oftentimes full of people and lively; playing cards, talking about their crops, and karaoke singing.

Sadly, he died years ago from a severe kidney failure at the time pandemic. It's sad that I couldn't pay him a visit for one last time because of the restrictions but I know he is well and in the better place now.

Another person who had been a father to us was our Grandfather. He was our protector; the one who often look after our welfare and our future though he was living miles away from us. He would took us away from our chaotic home bring us to his peaceful place. Even just for a while, we could escape from a place of a never ending quarrels and noisy drunkards. It was our joy every time he visits, because we that he would take one of us to his home and let us enjoy our summer days there as a normal kid without getting abused and beaten if we couldn't do the tasks that our father will tell us.

He continued looking our for us even if his health deteriorated. With his tired body, weak knees, and hypertension, he wouldn't ever forget to check on us and travel for miles just to make sure we're okay. Especially for Mom, in her every pregnancy, he was there because he knows that no one will take care of her. His heart aches everytimes she was belittled and verbally abused by her husband. Even in his last breath, he couldn't accept that.

They both had been good to us until the last straw of their breaths. It's why, my greatest regret was that I haven't been there for them when they needed us. I couldn't take care of them because I was working far away at that time, and all I could do was send them money for their needs. It was a lot of help, yes. But, our presence in their last moments was the most precious things. It's unfortunate and a sudden moment that not one of us ever expected for it to happen, but that already happened. All I could do for my fathers now is pray for them in heaven. I hope they can find peace and live there without any illnesses.

I also have an uncle like this, he was one of Mom's younger brothers and both of them have strong close bonds. Whenever we don't have food, or during calamities when our house is ruined, we will always stay at their house. He has a one child, and that cousin of mine is like my own brother because he is also a good person like my his dad.

It's nice to have them as we grow up, and I'm forever grateful.

It really sad seeing families whose the head of the family have vices and priorities it over his family but atleast you're blessed to have your uncle and your grandfather that stand as a lifeline and a protector to you.

It's a guilty feeling that I couldn't shake off even though I know they would understand.
