*Ekuru* A traditional Dish from my Hometown
This is my first time making a creative Sunday post.
I'm making a traditional Yoruba dish called Ekuru . This dish is eaten by most southwest state and some people call it ofuloju . It is made from beans.
It's very delicious but some people shy away from it thinking the process is rigorous, but it's rather very easy to make due to the availability of food processors like blender these days.
While growing up. This dish is made in our home once a while on weekends by my mum and we are always happy anything it's being prepared because it's really delicious. I have never made it on my own so, I decided to make it this weekend because I want something special for my family and I want to share with you, the ingredients and process of preparing Ekuru.
These are the items needed for the dish.
- Beans I used 3 cups
- Chilli peppers fresh and dried
- Onions 2 large ones
- Crayfish
- Fish 1
- Salt
- Seasoning powder
- Palm oil
The first thing to do is to peel the beans to be totally free of shafts like these. You get this result by soaking it in water and scrubbing it together with your hands to remove the skin. Make sure it's clean. This process is like cleaning a beans to prepare moi moi.
The next thing is to grind the beans. Unlike moi moi, you grind without adding anything. After blending the beans, you mix it very well to be fluffy and be careful not to add too much water.
You still wouldn't add anything to this. I just poured it inside the nylon and put it on fire to cook. Traditionally, what we use for this is a leaf but I couldn't get the leaves so, I made use of the nylon.
Put some water in a clean pot to boil and add the already tied grinded beans into the pot.
Allow it cook for about thirty minutes before bring it down.
While that is cooking, you grind the pepper and onion to paste. I used my grinding stone for this because I want to. You can blend it as you desire.
After grinding, I put a clean pot on the stove and add palm oil. When the oil is hot, I added some chopped onions, fried it for few seconds before adding the pepper and onion paste.
I allowed it to fry for sometime, I added the crayfish, fish, my seasoning powder, and salt.
I fried it for sometime just to allow it coagulate well.
I added a lot of fish because of the aroma it gives to the sauce
In less than twenty minutes, the sauce is ready.
Then, you open the already cooked Ekuru in a plate and add the sauce on top as much as you want.
I enjoyed my meal without using a spoon 🥄 or Forks 🍴 I used my fingers 🤌 and I enjoyed it. My son also enjoyed it. He asked me to prepare it again. My husband was just eating and smiling.
This is my entry to the hive learners community creative Sunday prompt.
All pictures are taken with my phone during the process of preparation.
Thanks for stopping by, I really appreciate you.

It's not hard to prepare tho
Yes
Thank you so much... I have been inquiring how to prepare ekuru but no good reply. I see you made the white one, pls how do I prepare the black ekuru.
If it's the sauce you mean black, you will use unripe pepper 🫑
But if it's the beans, I don't know a black one but there is the green one which they add potash to.
Wow, I see that Yoruba people got varieties of their traditional dish. I think the process isn't that rigorous for a special meal you love 😍..
I also noticed that you used the local blender to grind your fresh pepper 🌶️ and onions 🧅, that's interesting
Ekuru looks yummy 😋 and delicious
Glad you enjoyed the meal with your family.
Thanks for sharing

Thanks, Mama
I used my grinding stone for it because I want that unique taste and aroma. I use it a lot these days because of the epileptic power supply in my area.
Thanks for always supporting

The way you've laid out the process makes it seem quite approachable, even for those who might initially be daunted by traditional cooking methods.
