Mother Roaster, A Coffee Shop That Look A Like Garage
Hello everyone, Architecture & Design Community
Warm greetings to all of us..
At the end of this year, I have had many experiences, even though this year was not so good, it was not so bad either, but I have received many blessings and luck in 2022. Soon, in 26 days, we will return to the beginning of 2023, which will be the starting point for new experiences, new opportunities, and new targets, so that we become more mature and grow, day by day.
By the way, about luck, this year was really memorable for me, there were many unexpected events and also good luck amidst the bad, just like this year, I had a miscarriage last October, then got the opportunity and luck to go on vacation to Thailand. Unrealized, it's been 2 weeks since I just returned from the country and added an extraordinary experience and happiness in itself.
After my vacation, I opened my laptop and moved some of the photos on my iPhone, there was a photo that made me remember a memory when I was in Bangkok. At that time, I walked to visit some interesting places, but the trip took me to a very extraordinary place that I had never seen before.
I still remember that time, on a very hot day, I walked with blistered feet because I had walked for a very long time, then I found a very narrow alley, and I walked around it hoping there was a small restaurant so I could have lunch. I was really very tired at that time, my neck felt very dry and thirsty, needed a little refreshing drink.
This small alley led me to a very unique coffee shop, which has its own characteristics, which at first I thought was a small motorcycle repair shop located in a narrow alley. But I was even more curious because there were 2 strangers taking pictures in front of the garage. Then the two people entered and climbed the stairs, I was even more curious.
There was a small inscription at the entrance to the , Mother Roaster. The small print looked like the name of a coffee shop, but gave absolutely no indication that it was a coffee shop, without any clue. Very curious, until I was like a thief who would enter someone's house to steal, I also entered by following the two people. To my surprise when I climbed the 2nd floor of this house, I saw lots of people visiting this place. Like the silence killer, this house has been transformed into a unique and interesting coffee shop.
Mother roaster, it's like hidden gems in the city of Bangkok, even though it's not in the middle of the city, this is a coffee shop that has a unique taste, especially in terms of architecture and design. Not like a coffee shop in general, this coffee shop takes advantage of an ambiance from a small alley that is crowded with people's housing. This coffee shop is very hidden from the height of office buildings, but this small alley is an option that is often used by pedestrians for walking, so this is one of the reasons why this coffee shop is visited by many people.
At first glance, it does look like a rundown garage located on the edge of a narrow alley, lots of wood and metal scattered about, there are a number of tools used to repair motorbikes, broken bicycles and some dusty paintings and displays. The impression of this coffee shop is very, very interesting to explore. The 1st floor is not the coffee shop, but it is on the 2nd floor, but this is what makes visitors interested, this concept is liked by visitors for taking selfies or even just to build an ambiance.
I climbed the wooden stairs to go to the 2nd floor. Even though it was dusty, there were even lots of spider webs hanging in several wooden corners from the stairwell, I was a little afraid to linger on the 1st floor, it was so scary, especially when I was alone, afraid of ghosts which will appear suddenly because it's a bit dark here.
When I arrived on the 2nd floor, I was so surprised to see this coffee shop full of ornamental plants and several chairs that were specifically used for taking pictures. Likewise with the iron and wooden steps, this seems to be inspired by the houses in Chinatown. Classic and elegant, seeing the utilization of an old house that seems neglected and turned into a coffee shop is a brilliant idea.
Even though it uses an old house, the floors, steps, doors and windows are made of wood, there are no termites at all, the wood is so strong and sturdy. There are also some decorations such as fans and antique clocks used by ancient people, they display them on the right side of the coffee shop entrance. Before entering the coffee shop, you will be faced with a large wooden door with a slight renovation with a mirror that says Mother Roaster. If you stand in front of the door, then look down occasionally, you will see a very small sleeping Buddha statue.
I opened the door and was greeted by a coffee shop waiter, I was told to queue up so I could order coffee. Really, inside the room was very different from what I saw outside. It's very clean here, even cold because the room is air-conditioned, there are several chandeliers that are round and orange in color. There were plenty of chairs provided, but I didn't see any tables. Many people queue for a cup of coffee and dessert they sell.
This room is no less interesting with its design, there are some antique displays that they have, there are bicycles, some glasses and tools used to make coffee and also black and white paintings. Interestingly, even though there is little ventilation from the outside, this coffee shop is perfect as a place to rest when you avoid the hot sun from outside. Btw, the city of Bangkok at that time was really really hot and it almost made my head melt.
See you the next time hive friends!

Oh wow, I wasn't expecting this type of architecture! What a radical concept for a coffee shop @aswita! I haven't been and haven't seen one before. And based on your beautiful photos, it looks like an interesting space to chill and try a different kind of experience. 😊 Pardon me for my error on the Twitter-Posh description. That's suppose to be Thailand, not Indonesia. 😬
Weren't you scared of using that dilapidated wooden staircase going upstairs to the main cafe? How's the structural integrity of that old house?
Before climbing the stairs, I tried to be careful because it was a little noisy like wood rubbing, especially since I have a lot of weight. But it turns out that the wood used has a power that cannot be underestimated.
In fact, I've never seen this coffee shop in my city, they take advantage of an old house that hasn't been renovated at all, usually, coffee shops are made very fancy to attract attention. Very different from the mother roaster concept, isn't it fun?
Great to know that @aswita. I'm glad that old house is structurally suitable for a coffee shop operation. If not, their business permit wouldn't be approved in the first place, right? I'm curious though on what species of wood was used for that old staircase. Any idea? 😊
Isn't it obvious that it uses teak wood? maybe some of the wood has been replaced with meranti wood or similar, but for the big structure they use teak wood which is known for its durability. Is there another type of wood that is stronger?
Yes, teak wood is a suitable component for staircases, but can also be used for other spaces due to its durability and water-resistance. It's extremely popular in outdoor decks and terraces for swimming pools. Other alternatives for staircases could be oak, maple, and engineered types of wood which are becoming popular in architectural solutions nowadays. 😊
