Birth house of Simón Bolívar/ Casa Natal de Simón Bolívar

I recently went with my daughters on a guided tour of Simón Bolívar's birthplace, the most prominent historical figure in Venezuela, and no less controversial, not only for the analysis of his turbulent and relatively short life, but also for the political use that has been made of his figure practically since his death in late 1830 to the present day.

Admired by many and questioned by others, what is beyond doubt is that he is a crucial character to understand the history of Venezuela and the Andean countries and the independence struggle of South America itself.

In a way, we can describe the historical stages of the republican era in our country by how the relationship with this character developed. So inevitably he is a symbol for Venezuelans, and his house, in the historic center of the city, a few meters from the old Plaza Mayor, remains a mandatory reference in Caracas.

In addition, right now I am appreciating how that symbol is being constructed in the imagination of my little 5-year-old daughter, who was already very familiar with the equestrian image of the Liberator, due to the continuous pictorial references in the museum visits we make and because his image can be found anywhere. And when she started her first year of initial education, this was reinforced, understanding his relationship with the identity of the country itself.

So, in the case of my daughters, they did the tour with their naive curiosity, and really enjoyed getting to know the birthplace of the "horseman".

I find the site very interesting as a historic place, as it is one of the oldest buildings from colonial times that are still standing. It was founded in the mid-17th century, and was occupied for over a century by the Bolívar family. Some original objects from the period can be found, such as furniture, paintings, religious items, among others...

On the other hand, I cannot deny that I studied Anthropology, and my relationship with history and even more so with official history will always be critical. Even more so when you are confronted with the testimony of the material object and its multiple meanings.

In a way, I also understood that space as the focal representation of how colonial power was administered from one of the richest families of the Creole elite or “mantuanos”, as was at the time the Bolivar family, led, in this specific case, by Vicente Bolívar, Simón Bolívar's father.

Without a doubt a place with an imposing and pleasant architecture, very representative of Spanish colonial architecture, with interior patios and large corridors, recently restored and with a good dynamic with the tour guides.

A very crowded site these days, the visit is highly recommended.

Vsita a la Casa Natal de Simon Bolivar

Hace poco fui con mis hijas a una visita guiada a la Casa Natal de Simón Bolívar, el más destacado personaje histórico venezolano, y no menos controvertido, no solo por el análisis de su agitada y relativamente corta vida, también por el uso político que se ha hecho de su figura prácticamente desde su muerte a finales de 1830 hasta nuestros días.

Admirado por muchos y cuestionado por otros, lo que no se pone en duda es que es un personaje crucial para entender la historia de Venezuela y los países andinos y la propia gesta independentista de América del Sur.

De alguna forma podemos describir las etapas históricas de la era republicana de nuestro país, por la forma en que se fue dando la relación con este personaje. Así que ineludiblemente es un símbolo para los venezolanos, y su casa, en el propio casco histórico de la ciudad, a pocos metros de la antigua Plaza Mayor, sigue siendo una referencia obligada en la ciudad Caracas.

Además, justo en este momento estoy apreciando cómo se va construyendo ese símbolo en el imaginario de mi pequeña hija de 5 años, que ya conocía muy bien la imagen ecuestre del Libertador, por las continuas referencias pictóricas en las visitas que hacemos a los museos y porque es posible encontrar su imagen en cualquier lugar, y cuando comenzó su primer año de educación inicial esto se vio reforzado entendiendo su relación con la propia identidad del país

Entonces, en el caso de mis niñas, estuvieron en su recorrido con su curiosidad ingenua, y disfrutaron mucho conocer la casa natal del “señor del caballo”.

Me parece muy interesante el lugar como sitio histórico, al ser una de las construcciones más antiguas del periodo colonial que aún se mantienen en pie. Fue fundada a mediados del XVII, y estuvo ocupada por más de un siglo por la familia Bolívar, se pueden encontrar algunos objetos originales de la época, como muebles, pinturas, artículos religiosos, entre otros…

Por otro lado, no puedo negar que estudié Antropología, y mi relación con la historia y más aún con la historia oficial siempre será crítica. Más aún cuando te confrontas con el testimonio del objeto material y sus múltiples lecturas.

De alguna forma, también entendí ese espacio como la representación focal de cómo se administraba el poder colonial desde una de las familias más ricas de la élite criolla o “mantuanos”, como lo era en su momento la familia Bolívar, liderada, en este caso concreto, por Vicente Bolívar, padre de Simón Bolívar.

Sin duda un lugar con una arquitectura imponente y agradable, bien representativa de la arquitectura colonial española, con patios internos y grandes corredores, recientemente restaurada y con una buena dinámica con los guías del recorrido,

Un sitio muy concurrido en estas fechas, muy recomendable la visita.
