Sweet Potato Balls With Brown Sugar Filling
Being creative is a must. Or, a lot of food will just go to waste. As I get older, the people around me also rely on me more often for food. 😅 Maybe because they know, I can rely on my hands for this. So, their wishes will be fulfilled.
Plus, I'd love to make a lot of things. Even though in the end I wasn't the one who ate my cooking.
This time, I have 3 kilograms of sweet potatoes in orange colors. So, I'm thinking about a snacks menu that I can make with these sweet potato ingredients.
I bought these sweet potatoes from my aunt who came to my house a few days ago. My aunt offered me these fresh sweet potatoes from her garden. So I bought these sweet potatoes. The price is only IDR 10 K / $0.7. Pretty cheap!
Then, it occurred to me to make fried sweet potato balls. I have brown sugar stocks too. So, it will be a great option especially as my family members love these snacks.
In fact, when my mother was still alive, my mother often made this menu. I even remember looking for sweet potatoes in a big field and then I would give the results to my mother to make this sweet snack.
Well, I didn't even think that time would pass so quickly and all we would have were memories. No more than that.
So, back to the topic. Let's make sweet potato balls with brown sugar filling. 😊😊😊
THE INGREDIENTS
- 2 cups of sweet potato cubes or 3 small of sweet potatoes
- 1 cup of glutinous rice flour
- 100 grams of brown sugar, chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
COOKING INSTRUCTIONS
Prepare a bowl of water to soak sweet potatoes later. Peel sweet potatoes with a potato peeler for the easier way. Then, cut all the sweet potatoes into pieces to make them easier to make mashed sweet potatoes later.
Prepare a steamer. Then, steam the sweet potatoes for 10 minutes.
Prepare a big bowl. Then, add steamed sweet potatoes. Mash with a fork.
After getting mashed sweet potatoes, then add all glutinous rice flour with salt. Knead the mixture until the dough becomes smooth and can be shaped.
Use a spatula to mix all the ingredients first. Because the mashed sweet potatoes were still hot.
Well, it's normal if at the beginning you feel like the dough will have more flour. But you have to be patient. Then slowly until everything is mixed evenly then the dough will be good enough to form into balls without breaking the texture.
Prepare brown sugar, chopped brown sugar. For an easier way, I formed the brown sugar into small balls so it would be easier for me to make the filling into sweet potato balls.
I use a tablespoon measure to scoop the dough which I will shape into balls.
First, flatten the dough. Don't roll it out thin. Just flatten it a little and let it remain a thick dough to hold the filling so it doesn't leak out when fried later.
Then, add a filling. Then, cover the dough. Pinch the dough to cover the dough then gently round it again.
Heat cooking oil on medium heat. Then, add balls. Fry until they turn dark in color. Or, see if they have floated on the surface of the oil.
We need to flip these sweet potatoes so they can be cooked perfectly if using medium oil. That will make those balls cook evenly. Lift, then drain.
SERVING
Serve the sweet potato balls while warm to get a slightly chewy texture. When it cools, the texture will become softer because here I use gluten free flour: glutinous rice flour or sticky rice flour. So, the texture of the balls will not become hard.
In another version, you will see the sweet potato balls being rolled in sesame seeds before frying. But I chose to skip these ingredients.
Well, besides serving with frying method, we can also steam these sweet potato balls. But for steamed sweet potato balls, usually I will use additional grated coconut as a topping.
Also, we can replace brown sugar filling with peanut, or peanut butter, or even chocolate. ❤️
I really like it when a ball bursts in my mouth and the brown sugar filling explodes and then melts in my mouth. A super fun sensation 😊😋😋😋
So, happy being creative in the kitchen ❤️ and see you on my cooking stories, Foodies ☕☕☕

@anggereklestari,this i must try to cook this recipe of yours.
You should try it. But for the begginer, you should be carefull to not pop up the filling 😅 In the past, I often did it because too much brown sugar I added it
then, you have to use much oil so the balls not break down
Thanks for the tips @anggreklestari. I'm gaining new skills here. cheers
It is very true that we have to teach people that when we are in the kitchen, there are two important things, at least the almost exact use of the products and the cleanliness of the utensils to use and in the kitchen itself. @anggreklestari I like them, they look like boñuelos as they do in Venezuela, I love sweet potatoes, they are very nutritious. Success in your publication.
indeed, they are vey nutritious, and thank you for stopping by :)
Good day. Very nice post. From Venezuela I wish you much success.
I wish you success too 😊
Thank you @anggreklestari , from the city of Cumaná, capital of the state of Sucre in Venezuela, we are here to serve you and thank you for your visits. Best of luck.

Excellent option 👍

It almost looks like "jemblem", but I bet it is more yumm because it comes from potatoes ^^

I usually make cheese balls but potato balls sound like some really tasty snacks to have in between the main meals of the day!
Sweet potato balls indeed similar with potato balls, but sweet potato has softer texture than potato in general. You can also replace the filling with cheese as always 😊
That already sounds a lot more tasty haha
😊❤️
Wow what an economical sweet potatoes! and I thought it was very ingenious what you have done with them, it looks good! 😋🌹
Yes, very cheap here. That's why can be fav for any people here 😊
These look like tangerines. I'm sure they are very tasty, I didn't know that the forks there have three prongs.
Well, the fork is just for photo properties 😅 😛
you're indeed a food scientist @anggreklestari, you are very creative in food. In the Philippines, we have a version like this. Instead of Potato, we use cassava. It is called "Buchi". thank you for sharing the new receipt to explore.
in Indonesia, we have cassava balls as well, with same cooking method :)
They look like apricots. Very nice and looks delicious. :)
yeaap, the shape is cute :). glutinous rice flour made the texture a soft but a little chewy :)
Every day we learn something new by reading your post on how to make it better so we try it at home too.
